SMU vs Southern Methodist

I've noticed that over the years, many teams prefer to have a marketable name when it comes to their athletic branding. TCU wants to stay away from Texas Christian, UAB absolutely despises Alabama-Birmingham, and I'm sure all the schools that have changed names hate being called Memphis State or North Texas State.

Anyways, what do you think about being called SMU vs Southern Methodist? I'm mostly talking about media coverage, not what will go on hats, t-shirts, uniforms, etc. Personally, you could go by Bob Arnuckle's College and it wouldn't matter if you were top 25 and beat some name teams. I really don't mind being Southern Methodist or SMU. I think it helps to have people know our whole name, and not guess that it's "southern mississippi?"

I have always said Southern Methodist due to stopping at a Burger King in waco with a SMU sweatshirt and having the girl behind the register ask if I went to Southwest Missouri or something.

I like doing foul things in waco. It is a long standing habit of mine on the drive between Austin and Dallas.

yeah - LOL

here in calif - i always say southern methodist -

but then again, if we were a top 10 team, more people would know us by either 'SMU' or 'Southern Methodist' -

winning solves identity crises -

with the 60 & over crowd, 'SMU' is known by all / even in calif -

LOL

that's only cause they heard stories from their parents about the miraculous trip SMU took to the Rose Bowl in 1935.

Game video and studio show video from the early 80s always had "So. Methodist." I remember seeing the bball Top 20 (not 25 then) said So. Methodist as well.

Quite a few attorneys down here have bumper stickers touting their alma mater...StMU...St. Mary's in San Antonio...on first glance it looks like SMU.

Actually most people here in the east know us by SMU - and immediately mention Eric Dickerson and if they're older Doak Walker. Given that the United Methodist church has now stated publicly that it welcomes gay members, I'll play down the Methodist part.
