Year in Review ... Bond passage, Bush library race mark year for Midland College

For Midland College President David Daniel, the most significant event of 2005 was passage of a $41 million bond issue for additions and improvements to the campus he loves.

Also, as part of the West Texas Coalition with Lubbock, Midland College is one of four institutions in the running for the George W. Bush Presidential Library. Part of the proposal includes a Laura Bush literacy center to be put here.

"The victory was one that should be shared by hundreds of people, starting with our board of trustees and their collective wisdom with respect to timing. It's been 30 years or more since the (last) bond issue for the college," Daniel said of the bond issue.

Board President Neil Florer said the bond is something good for the community. "I think the future is going to be even bigger. The bond will really help," he said.

Sixty-nine percent of voters approved a $41.8 million bond issue for building and improvements to Midland College on May 7. This was one of the largest victories for a voter-approved tax increase in the last decade.

Daniel praised Linda Cowden and her 30-member committee for helping get the bond passed. "They did one of the most thorough and complete jobs," he said. "Nearly 70 percent of people voted for it. Citizens of Midland and our service area will look with pride on the college as they watch these projects become reality."

For the Bush library and literacy center, the college joined forces with Texas Tech in early fall. Other schools in the running are the University of Dallas, Southern Methodist University and Baylor University. A decision is expected in the second half of 2006.
