The Office

Postby BRStang » Fri Jun 02, 2006 9:59 am

Over the past few weeks, I have caught glimpses of that sitcom on NBC called "The Office" while flipping channels. A couple of weeks ago, I remarked to my wife that one of the show's characters looked eerily familiar. Last night, I saw him again and it hit me that he was in my class at SMU. Sure enough, I checked online and in my "Who's New (to Screw) at SMU" from 1991 and saw that HE WAS IN MY CLASS.

Brian Baumgartner (B.F.A '95) is the large, balding guy on NBC's "The Office." And, guess what...it's actually a pretty funny show, too. I will now be making it a regular on my TV schedule.

"Who's New (to Screw) at SMU" - the 'to screw' was added by students - was required reading freshman year.
It's a book filled with mugshots of all the new freshmen so we could get to know each other better. As upperclassmen, we'd score copies of the books from AARO leader friends so we could check out the new talent in advance.

As for The Office guy, I watched last night and decided he's one of the best characters. SMU tends to breed weird character actors like the guy from Groundhog Day.
Just my two cents.

I thought I had recognized him from The Sasquatch Dumpling Gang

Plot Outline: Young, fantasy/sci-fi aficionado Gavin Gore and his friends stumble onto some huge footprints in the woods. A local cop, reporter and a renowned Sasquatch authority investigate, while two of Gavin's dim-witted neighbors hatch a scheme to profit from the situation.

One of his cousins was in Mustang Band with me in the mid 90s. Also, I noticed that he went to Kimball, alma mater of the Great Quinton Ross. There definitely have been some interesting character actors that have passed through SMU. Tobolowsky is one and another is Bill Fagerbakke(Dauber from "Coach"), who did his grad work here. Belita Moreno, who plays George Lopez' mom and was on "Perfect Strangers," is another as well.
