She was funny, got things done and was one of the few Democrats I voted for

I was working at the Daily Campus when she won in 1990. I'll never forget the headline we had the next day, "Richards Rolls".

Remember the DNC speech she gave in 1988 about Bush 41?
"Poor George. He can't help it. He was born with a silver foot in his mouth.''

Then after Bush beat Dukakis, The Wall Street Journal ran a political cartoon with Richards going through the air with a foot print on her booty. Caption said, "Compliments of 'ol silverfoot.''

Funny.

But God rest her soul. Didn't she spend her last years living in New York?

I never agreed with much of her politics, but I will give her credit for one thing as Gov: she built prisons rather than turn criminals loose.
I HATE the University of Texas!

If not for her, Baylor and SMU would probably be in the same conference today.

Whether you voted for her or not, she was a great woman and a TRUE TEXAN! She was outspoken and flamboyant and she got things done.

Personally, I kind of scratch my head on the "got things done" comments. One of the hallmarks of her campaign was insurance reform, which simply never got off the ground (and still hasn't).

Yeah, she was a well known Texan in national politics, but lets not go overboard. She was a one-term governor who barely beat one idiot and got beat by what most of y'all refer to as an idiot as well. Her entire 1994 campaign was one of the great political miscalculations of the last 20 years.

She got legislation passed that helped build more prisons instead of letting criminals out on early release.

Blog - let's keep this thread as paying tribute, not discounting the woman.
