Construction Update

Postby SMUfrat » Thu Aug 27, 2015 2:48 pm

Does anyone know if the Smith Health Center is U/C?

How is the Education Quad coming?

Are they working on Mockingbird Plaza?

Apparently they hit a sewer line last night and had to evacuate Virginia-Snyder. Kids had to get bussed to hotels or stay at friends houses.

What I assume is the locker room building at the lacrosse fields south of the Bush Center sure is going up quickly.

Last I heard it wouldn't be fixed until at least tomorrow.

Good thing it wasn't next week or it would have given the students an excuse not to go to the football game.

Health Center is under construction and well underway.

Second Simmons School of Education Building has been under construction for several months. They are getting close to being done with it. Probably ready for the spring semester.

Work is being done at Mockingbird Plaza. They have repaved the entire parking lot and are erecting a sound barrier in the SMU Georgian brick behind the retail center. Next phase will be updating the facade of the retail center.

Lacrosse/Intramural fields are under construction also. Still a good ways to go for that to be done.

Half the roads on campus are closed or being converted to pedestrian walkways. Tried to do a window tour a couple weeks ago when down in Big D for a wedding; couldn't even get to Bishop from Moody/Crum.

That road is open now. I did that earlier this week.

Is the road between Boaz and the MBA building going to be converted to pedestrian or still allow cars? I saw it's all torn up right now.

Yes - Pedestrian and no cars.

Now you cannot even walk between the Cox School and the parking garages (Moody or Binkley)without going out to Bishop. A real mess now - even for pedestrians.

Thanks. I guess there wasn't much of a reason to allow cars through there. I look forward to when all this construction is over (if it ever is)

It won't be over on main campus until 2017 at the earliest. The next major phase will be the relocation of the frat houses opposite the Bush Library.

From the university:

1. Will the fraternity houses on SMU Boulevard be relocated?

The SMU Master Plan, which is currently under review, indicates the fraternity houses on SMU Boulevard will eventually be re-located. While no specific relocation site has been confirmed, the preliminary indications are that the SMU Boulevard fraternities will be relocated to the Dyer cul-de-sac and McFarlin Boulevard.

2. If the fraternity houses on SMU Boulevard are re-located, when will the re-location occur?

It has not yet been determined when the relocation will occur. The best guesstimate at this point in time is approximately five years from now. Relocation is dependent upon a number of factors, including moving an existing building (the Dawson Service Center), re-zoning the area for university use including additional student housing, and the availability of University resources to fund building new houses for the six fraternities currently located on SMU Boulevard.
