Postby Water Pony » Mon Apr 25, 2016 2:44 pm

Congratulations to the Men's LAX Team on beating Texas State for the LSA Division I Championship this weekend and winning a spot in the upcoming MCLA National Championships in Orange County, California. Plus an undefeated season. Well done, Mustang LAXers.

Way to go. Does the LSA have a football division?

I am not trying to Troll.

Roughly speaking, how competitive is our club team vs. the typical NCAA program? Why? If we wanted to step up, how far would we need to go?

Isn't Denver one of the top teams in the country because kids from Western states want to stay in the west wouldn't we be an alternative to Denver?

SMU is Lone Star Alliance (LSA) Lacrosse Champs

Denver is one of the top teams in the country because they have one of the best lacrosse coaches in the history of the game. Tierney won 6 national championships at Princeton. They also bought into bringing in Indoor lacrosse players from Canada very early on. I wouldn't say being the farthest west program in country has that much to do with it. Less than half roster is from west of Mississippi and I would bet most of those are walkons.

That being said, I think some of SMU's soccer success has had to do with being only D1 program for 100s of miles (Tulsa doesn't count). If SMU had lacrosse, I think it could take its pick of the talent in in 750 mile radius.

I think we would have our pick from this area, but also would draw strong from California and east coast. This is among the more natural sports for SMU - and we really need to go ahead and jump in.

Denver has a number of Canadians to go with their other players. SMU would have to draw from a lot of markets and not just the West to be successful. I'd love it but not putting any money on SMU going Varsity. To answer a previous question, the best clubs are on par with D3 programs.

Tulsa as of late has actually had a better soccer team than SMU. Certainly they are on the same level as us.

Lost 11-3 to my bet for the eventual champions.

Historic year for men's lacrosse. Extremely proud of the program!

Congratulations to SMU LAXers. Yes, a great season with their first trip to Championship Tournament. Lessons learned will pay dividends. This was the strongest team SMU has ever produced and our progress will continue. Well done, Mustangs!

Thoughts on the Game:

1) Cal Poly has better players than SMU. Athleticism was about even, but they had significantly better stick skills and field awareness.
2) Early in the game SMU took really bad approach angles on their men (even on doubles) this let Cal Poly players get into the soft spots on the team defense.
3) CalPoly's face off men were outstanding - they were playing "Make It, Take It"
4) I would be interested to see the final stats, but it seemed like CalPoly got every single GB in the first 3 quarters.
5) SMU's substitution process is baffling. They substitute at the beginning of transition, this takes away your numerical advantage while clearing the ball. Then they substitute late on the defensive end and this gave CalPoly a numerical advantage against SMU's defense.
6) When SMU had the ball on offense they didn't move the ball and force the defense to continually readjust. This allowed CalPoly to get very comfortable and send continuous double teams - creating turnovers.
7) SMU's man down defense is really good - unfortunately they had to play it often.
8) Cal Poly was pretty good in transition offense. SMU was not (see substitution problems above).
9) Sadly, we were simply outclassed in this one.
