From the American Athletic Conference:

AMERICAN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE EXTENDS CONTRACT OF COMMISSIONER ARESCO THROUGH 2022

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The American Athletic Conference Board of Directors has announced that the contract of Commissioner Mike Aresco has been extended through June 2022.

In extending Commissioner Aresco’s contract, The American’s presidents and athletic directors lauded his efforts in organizing the reinvented conference four years ago and in elevating its national profile and brand, and articulating a powerful vision for its future.

“Mike Aresco has done an outstanding job of leading the American Athletic Conference through its early years and I am very happy that he will continue on with us,” said Susan Herbst, President of the University of Connecticut and Chair of The American’s Board of Directors. “Mike is a strong commissioner who is respected by the presidents and institutions within the Conference. It is important for The American to have excellent, consistent leadership and that is what Mike provides.”

“I am extremely proud of the progress that this Conference has made,” Aresco said. “Our presidents and athletic directors have made the commitment necessary for us to become a Power 6 conference and have, in a difficult environment, provided the vision and resources that have enabled our student-athletes and coaches to compete at the highest level. This conference has achieved a series of remarkable milestones in its relatively short existence, and the future is very promising. I deeply appreciate the confidence placed in me by our Board of Directors that is reflected in this extension, and I am proud and delighted to represent our conference as we embrace, with a collective determination and spirit, the many challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.”

In his years at the helm of The American, Aresco has overseen the Conference’s significant achievements and strong growth. Under Aresco’s leadership, The American was reconstituted in 2013 with a new set of logos and branding initiatives. Expansion has added Navy in football, East Carolina, Tulsa and Tulane in all sports, and most recently, Wichita State in basketball.

The American was named in 2016 as a finalist for the Sports Business Journal Sports League of the Year award and was the only entity from college athletics to be so honored.

Aresco was instrumental in establishing the automatic New Year’s Bowl berth for the highest-ranked team among five FBS conferences, and he negotiated for a College Football Playoff protocol that would permit the Army-Navy football game to remain on the Saturday following the conclusion of the conference championship games and still afford Navy consideration as a College Football Playoff or New Year’s Bowl team if warranted.

Under his direction, the Conference has been a leader in NCAA governance redesign, where it continues to hold a seat on the NCAA Board, and with issues such as concussion protocols, football recruiting reforms, student-athlete time demands and transfer rules, among other issues.

In football, success on the field has been extensive, including Fiesta Bowl and Peach Bowl victories by member schools; 19 wins, including high-profile wins against Penn State, Ole Miss, Miami, Florida State, Oklahoma and Louisville, in the past two years against the other Power 6 conferences and Notre Dame; 32 football games in the past two years with at least one million television viewers, and the establishment of divisional play and a very successful football championship game televised nationally in consecutive years on ABC. In basketball, the UConn men won the national championship in 2014 and the UConn women won four consecutive national championships, including three in The American, and appeared in four Final Fours. The league has had outstanding venues for its men’s and women’s basketball championships. Olympic sports have produced NCAA Super Regional baseball teams, two individuals who have won NCAA championships, and an NCAA semifinalist in tennis, among other accomplishments.

A long-term sponsorship deal with IMG has driven revenue, and Frontier Communications was signed as the 2017 title sponsor of the men’s and women’s basketball championships. The American has a thriving digital network and is an active participant in social media via Facebook, Twitter and other platforms.

The Conference is currently in the midst of a dynamic Power 6 campaign, which seeks to align The American with other P6 conferences and which celebrates the competitive success that the Conference has enjoyed at the highest levels of collegiate competition.

Great news he is doing a great job moving The American into the conversation and into the realm of a potential power six.
