Interesting stat on Cox BBA

Postby gostangs » Sat Jun 24, 2017 9:56 am

Was looking at website Poets and Quants - and they had a listing of student quality as measured by average SAT scores from 2016. Cox was tied for fourth in the country - pretty impressive. Above us - only Wash U, ND, and Wharton. We are tied with Carnegie Mellon, NYU and Berkley. Well above Virginia, UT, USC, Indiana and Michigan. A&M and TCU not even close.

Its just one metric - but that is pretty crazy company. Pretty sure that is driven through the Cox scholar program - so if you are looking for something to donate to that is really making a difference at SMU than there you go!

BRING BACK THE GLORY DAYS OF SMU FOOTBALL!!!

For some strange reason, one of the few universities that REFUSE to use their school colors: Harvard Crimson & Yale Blue.

Strategic question is how big do you make the b-school population as a % of the total. Despite having lower SAT scores, I hear that it's also very challenging to get into public university undergrad b-schools. A seemingly easy money grab, and SAT/ranking booster, would be to increase your incoming freshman b-school class size.

Yeah I think there is a chance to see SMU get a little bigger by increasing the size of the BBA program by 100 or so a grade. We will need to grow the size of SMU to have more relevance.

Better yet, keep SMU the same size and make sure its affordable for all students before you expand aka increase endowment and scholarships (you could increase cox but should decrease other majors to accomplish same goal). Stop comparing SMU to state schools and so so private schools. Look at Rice and emulate them but keep the competitive sports. Stop building and invest in the students.

Makes sense you will have better students when you hand out a disproportionate amount of scholarships compared to other majors.

We need to grow Cox, Lyle and the sciences part of Dedman. We have too much dead weight in other parts of the university. Liberal arts, meadows , Perkins and Dedman law just don't give much back or create much research.

SMU needs to be bigger. Dallas has doubled and we have stayed the same. Look at USC - that who to use as a guide. 15k undergrad and good at everything. LA has embraced them, even those that didn't go there. Our share of mind in DFW is too low.

Maybe Dallas would embrace SMU if it was in a worse part of Dallas like USC is in LA?

USC was the professional team for LA when the Raiders and Rams left, number one reason why they probably have the most non affiliated fans out of any private school other than Notre Dame. 'SC does carry the elitist stigma like people associate SMU with but they have done a good job still of getting the city to embrace the university. It also helps that their football team has won 11 national titles.

I've always though the Marshall Business School is a good example of a school Cox can compare to. Private business school in major urban area, etc.

Ha! Whatever-you Cox guys are ridiculous. Dedman may have produced more Billionaires than Cox. Especially Robert Dedman and Gerald Ford-what have they contributed to the university? We need to improve all colleges of the university to be considered a world-class university. I could just as easily claim that the the biggest contribution to SMU from the Business School was the Death Penalty-and I'd still be closer to truth that some of the crap posted above

Dedman Law is the highest ranked school at SMU. Imagine what it would be if it was properly funded and not used as a cash cow at SMU. What the school has done to its graduate programs is borderline criminal.

Ford got his undergrad from SMU - that is why he supports SMU the way he does. Very few of our law school grads step up to the plate for the university. Glad we have a nice law school - although the demand for new lawyers is dropping pretty dramatically - but the bell cow for SMU is Cox. Absolutely Improve all colleges of the university, but it is good to be aware of what really drives the ship. Literally half our undergrads come to SMU to be in Cox or to try to be in Cox.
