Free Speech Allowed at SMUModerators: PonyPride, SmooPower Re: Free Speech Allowed at SMUwhile at dinner tonight with 5 guys, one mentioned this issue and pulled out his cell phone to show me the article. I am embarrassed and disappointed in my school.
Re: Free Speech Allowed at SMUUniversity of Chicago came out with a policy supporting the first amendment. Graduating students who learn how to defend their ideas based on their merits in a collage campus setting is a lot better than the alternative.
Re: Free Speech Allowed at SMUI think the school just moved the designated area for ALL displays. No big deal. Infact, the new designated area is at a central location as well. Not sure that "central location" is embedded in the First Amendment anyway. The display can still be viewed. On channel 8 last night they reported that Gov. Abbott had contacted Pres. Turner and asked the school to reconsider. Really? To me that is more concerning than moving the designated area for displays.
One conveat, I would have left the "triggering, harmful, or harassing" language out of the policy. Just a policy designating the area is all that is needed. UPDATE: The triggering, harmful, or harrassing" wording has been taken out of the policy.
Re: Free Speech Allowed at SMUPres. Turner's reply to Gov. Abbott's letter, from the Daily Campus Story that has both posted:

Re: Free Speech Allowed at SMUHelp me understand what SMU did wrong here. I love the campus and spent many hours studying at the fountain. I love the fact that we have a beautiful space in front of Dallas Hall where people can gather, play, study, move around. I think that SMU was correct in making the decision to move any and all events like the one in questions, and others, to one location, so that we can leave the area in front of Dallas Hall open.
Re: Free Speech Allowed at SMUAt least Gerry is allowing the student body the right to place beer tents in front of Dallas Hall on game days; which supports our rights to PARTAY !!!!! Priorities intact. Pony up.

Re: Free Speech Allowed at SMUTime to update the Alma Mater.
Oh we see the Showflakes cry, Showflakes cry, Showflakes cry, As they cower o'er the hill Over there. And our pride is filled with shame, SMU, SMU, Alma Mater, we're now screwed Forever! Embarrassing! Last edited by ponyte on Thu Aug 03, 2017 2:16 pm, edited 1 time in total.
Re: Free Speech Allowed at SMUThis along with fumbling of the slain police's daughter volleyball tribute proves that this admin is staffed with reactionary dolts. Maybe they consider these episodes free marketing and recruitment tools for future gender and identity confused students
Re: Free Speech Allowed at SMUSMU and the 9/11 posters should have communicated from the get go. I believe in the pass the 9/11 memorial was always at Dallas Hall, first impression is SMU is against the 9/11 memorial by demanding the flags be removed from Dallas Hall lawn. foresight and communication would have prevented this kerfuffle.
I like to take this opportunity to make ponyfans aware of an organization called tunnel to tower. http://tunnel2towers.org/ a NYC fireman named Steve Stiller ran through the Brooklyn Tunnel (1 mile long) to join his fellow firefighters, carrying all his fire fighting equipment weighting over 60 pounds. the entire trip was 5k (3 miles) he died in the fire along with 343 firefighters. every year in NYC, tunnel to tower hosts a 5k race tracing his journey. it is 2nd to NYC marathon for number of participants (30,000+). Now other towns and cities across USA have a 5k race commemorating this event. surprisingly no 5k in Texas. Would be a great opportunity to establish one right about now. this is a non profit organization and they do wonder things. a few weeks ago 2 NYC cops were ambushed in their car, this organization paid off their mortgage and paid for the funeral. they do good works all over the USA.
Re: Free Speech Allowed at SMUI've defending Turner in the past, but this is just dumb and a really bad look for SMU on a national scale

Re: Free Speech Allowed at SMUWhatever happened with the volleyball invitation for the policeman's daughter. Was anyone ever punished or fired from the school?
