SAM DEALEY MOH WINNER

Postby No Quarter » Thu Feb 15, 2018 3:51 am

I'm writing this post because WW II USN officer and MOH winner Sam Dealey had an SMU connection. I've included a lot of links if anyone wants to learn more.

I saw a TV program recently about the submarine HARDER and skipper Sam Dealey and decided to find out if there was a connection between Dealey Plaza and Dealey Elementary and the man who was the subject of the program.

It turns out that the school is named for the uncle of the subject of the TV program.

The program I saw was originally shown in 2016 and played again a night or so ago on the Smithsonian Channel. Some of you will have seen it already. Others may know already everything I've related below.

Episode 5, titled Destroyer Killer, of a series about submarine warfare, HELL BELOW, is about World War II USN Commander Sam Dealey who was the first and only skipper of the USS Harder which sank several Japanese destroyers. Dealey and his boat or both of them became known as "Destroyer Killer." The submarine and all the crew were lost on the last patrol and Dealey received a posthumous MOH.

I had known, in a general way, about Dealey and Harder for a long time and wondered if Dealey Elementary school in North Dallas (now evidently some sort of magnet school) was named for him The answer is, "No." The school is named for his uncle, George Dealey (1859 -1946) who was the long time owner of the DMN. Dealey Plaza is also named for him.

It does turn out that Sam Dealey has a Dallas and SMU connection and that is why this post. He graduated from Oak Cliff HS (now Adamson) and spent two years at SMU before being appointed to Annapolis in 1925 where he finished in 1930. .

There is a species of fish, Chelon richardsonii, called the "harder."
