And they can’t even afford athletics with that kind of price structure?

How much can a fountain cost????

SMU totally out of control trying to charge for both an elite education and an elite basketball program! Imagine that...

Right. Maybe we should expand the Economics program. You price at what the market can bear.

Next question: Within reason, why should we give a rat’s patoot about rankings?

SMU has a very generous financial aid package that goes to a very large % of students

SMU does a poor job of marketing this fact especially locally

SMU attracts a very large number of east and west coast students and again SMU does a poor job of marketing that fact especially locally

SMU is able to attract those students because on the east coast their private schools are extremely expensive and as competitive if not more competitive and thus they do not have to offer the financial aid especially with the larger base of high income families to choose from

because those schools have the much higher LOCAL reputations no one questions their tuition the just hope they can afford it and for that their kid can manage to qualify for the highly competitive financial aid

it is sort of the opposite of UT.....UT is very affordable for in state and very popular and highly ranked thus they do not need to offer a great deal of financial aid AND UT has a very good national reputation and is affordable for out of state as well especially with comparable public and even more so private schools....and thus UT does not need to offer much financial aid for those students either

so UT "gets away with" not offering a great deal of financial aid

at "rack rate" SMU is not that competitive with the schools they want to be peers with, but when you look at the metrics needed to get financial aid at SMU Vs some of those peers SMU looks very good.....BUT SMU does not get much local credit for that and SMU is not moving in the national perception either compared to the schools SMU wishes to peer with......the local perception probably does not help that national perception either

SMU does seem to market themselves a bit better on a national level especially with the financial aid and thus they do attract a large number of east and west coast students (and Illinois students as well), but it just does not translate in the rankings

I feel SMU went a bot overboard on building during the last capital campaign and did not put enough money into the endowment for the long term and SMU has not moved aggressively enough in overall research and engineering and thus their reputation will remain lower than desired peers

at this point it is a difficult sell "hey we attract a lot of out of state students with financial aid" does not sell locally and it is hard to break the perception of being a "rich school" even when you point out that those "rich" that pay full tuition are paying the freight for a lot of other students on financial aid and the very people that bash SMU as a rich school" are the first that would demand the "rich pay more"......yet they would find a way to bash SMU if SMU pointed out that a large % of full tuition and endowment dollars go to FINANCIAL AID for students that are NOT RICH.....all the more so locally when the local idiots would cry that "local students" were not getting the benefit while ignoring that "local students" they champion probably read at the grate 9 level and thus do not belong anywhere but community college at best

a lot of people especially on here complained about the past staff cuts, but they ignored there were really not many "cuts" there were just positions that were open that were going to go unfilled and or that would be eliminated as they emptied

they pointed to the high tuition and wondered how the school was "struggling" when the school was not struggling at all it was just not going to bloat the administration more than it had already allowed

unfortunately I would imagine SMU could do the same type of cuts 1 or 2 more times and still have a bit too much overhead (just like all universities these days), but SMU will probably not do so and they will probably frame the message poorly just like last time if they do make "cuts"

the transition in higher education seems to have caught SMU totally off guard and SMU seems to have no idea how to frame their message or to market themselves properly or how to point out the positives while shutting down the negative perceptions

at this point it will probably take an influx of donor dollars places into the CORRECT programs, an elevation of the business program to a higher level, the law program to a higher level and a massive increase in research funding and STEM program reputation

unfortunately the elevation of the business and law programs to higher levels will not "sell" to many of the critics it will be seen as more of the same and the elevation of research and STEM programs will cost a lot of money and take a concerted message to sell......and will probably need to be done before or at the same time the law and business programs are elevated so the critics have less to focus on with those programs and the associated cost in terms of tuition and cost to run them and offer them at a higher level

time? Really? Is that even still around? Not one pays attention to that ranking - it's silly. Nothing matters except USNWR ranking.

Got it. 81 nationally on that list. 4th in Texas just behind trinity. Way ahead of TCU/Baylor.

Over 300 spots ahead of UTD which everyone on here seems worried about.

A lot of the Bain cuts seemed to have been in low to mid-level staff, not the higher levels.

Room & Board is also pretty high relative to peers. Not sure why that's the case. Paying off the new dorms? Much better quality living conditions and food?

SMU is definitely paying off the dorms. At my undergrad alumni that want naming rights to dorms purchase the whole dorm and an endowment to help fund unexpected costs that can occur in the futures. Some of the Alimni paid 5 million dollars for naming rights.

Do the original purchasers own the naming rights for the rest of Eternity? - or are they reshuffled every few years to the highest bidder?

They are named forever. They sold those too cheap. 5M is nothing to have your name on a dorm for 100 plus years. We'd have less to pay off it they had priced that better.

That said - low interest rates are helpful - they are paying them off quickly.
