Women’s Basketball, Men’s Swimming And Diving Earn AAC Team Excellence Awards

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (The American/SMU) – Women's basketball and men's swimming and diving were honored with the American Athletic Conference Team Academic Excellence Award for their respective sports, league officials announced Thursday.

The award is given annually to the male and female teams in each conference-sponsored sport with the highest cumulative grade-point-average.

The women's basketball team finished the year with a 3.25 GPA, and 10 student-athletes achieved at least a 3.0 individually. This is the first time in program history the women's basketball team has earned a conference academic award. The fall of 2017 marked the first semester on record that the Mustangs averaged a team GPA of at least 3.0, a feat the program has achieved in each of the last four semesters.

Men's swimming and diving continued to excel in the classroom, posting a 3.227 cumulative grade point average for the 2018-19 season. The Mustangs also earned CSCAA Scholar All-America Team honors following the fall and spring semesters, posting GPAs of 3.11 and 3.21, respectively. Individually, seven student-athletes were named to the conference All-Academic Team, earning a 3.0 or higher.

The Mustangs have earned the award five out of six seasons since The American's inception in 2013.

The conference also announced the All-Academic Team, consisting of student-athletes who participated in an AAC-sponsored sport, obtained a 3.0 GPA for the preceding academic year and completed a minimum of two consecutive semesters or three consecutive quarters of academic work, with a minimum 18 semester or 27 quarter credits, not including remedial courses. SMU placed a total of 233 student-athletes on the team.
