Construction is underway on a new student housing project at Southern Methodist University for upperclassmen.

The 53,000-square-foot, three-story building at 3130 Daniel Avenue will include 36 two-bedroom suites, a laundry facility, common space, kitchenette and study rooms. It’s replacing three apartment buildings and two support buildings that were torn down.

“Daniel House will help SMU meet the growing demand for apartment-style living,” said Doug Talley, CEO of Talley Riggins Construction Group, which is building the new housing on the Dallas campus. "We have been working on several upgrades on the SMU campus as the school seeks to update and repurpose older buildings.”

The exterior is a mix of cast stone, masonry, and detailed elements such as the entry portico and multi-layered cornice. It’s intended to convey a modern design while blending in with the university’s existing Collegiate Georgian architecture. Merriman Anderson/Architects is the architect and interior designer on the project.

Daniel House is scheduled for completion in July 2020. The project’s cost was not disclosed.

SMU is a private university with about 12,000 students.

Replaces some crappy apartments. Cost per student will go up but it’s a nice upgrade. Location is great for students without cars. Parking is a big complaint from commuters.

My daughter just accepted a place in the SMU class of 2024. Another option after first two years in dorms.

Congratulations!

I wonder though if it will still be just for transfer students like the old Daniel house was or if now its open to all upper classmen.

Thanks everyone. I'm very excited for her and glad she got in. SMU is an increasingly popular choice. At least four in her class already committed through early decision.
