Stanford cutting 11 sports

Postby PonyPride » Wed Jul 08, 2020 2:21 pm

From ESPN.com:

Stanford to cut 11 varsity sports, cites pandemic as breaking point

Alex Scarborough
ESPN Staff Writer

Stanford, which has long boasted one of the most robust collections of varsity sports in the country, will cut 11 of its varsity programs at the conclusion of the 2020-21 academic year as it deals with the ongoing financial ramifications of the coronavirus pandemic.

The 11 sports that will be discontinued are men's and women's fencing, field hockey, lightweight rowing, men's rowing, co-ed and women's sailing, squash, synchronized swimming, men's volleyball and wrestling.

Coaches and athletes were notified of the decision via Zoom conferences on Wednesday.

Going to see a lot of schools doing that. Money talks.

Every single one of those sports should be a club sport anyway. Fencing?
Somebody saw their chance with the cover of Covid and took the shot.

At least 8 of them are Olympic sports. You don't develop Olympians in club sports.
They're not all my favorites, but this is a bad omen for teams at schools across the country.

Stanford has the 3rd biggest endowment at 27.7 billion. This definitely shows things to come, especially for private schools.

And now the Big 10 is making sports play fall sports against conference opponents only:

Florida State cutting athletic budget by 20% and eliminating 25 staff positions. In addition, salary reductions of between 10-25% across the board. It’ll be interesting to see what happens to the SMU athletic department budget.

i actually think trimming down these college sports and athletic departments is a good thing. Olympic sports should have their own training groups - shouldn't need universities to foot that bill - its not their charge. Also on the revenue sports - they have become entirely too "pro" anyway. Let the NFL start up a minor league and get college sports back to students.

Exempting Men’s FB from Title IX would be a step in the right direction, but i don’t see it happening in this environment.

If we can, I don’t think we should or will cancel any sports. We want to demonstrate we have a Power 5 Athletic structure, expectation and budget. Cutting us further will ensure we will remain Group 5 or worse.

We have to play long ball. We have the means, if we choose to lean in, not out, during this crisis.

It's so obvious but will never happen because of the climate we live in.
