Football this fall? No way

Postby mr. pony » Fri Jul 17, 2020 8:51 am

Sadly, the media have successfully scared the BEJEZZUS out of folks - AGAIN - for a virus whose death rate is now less than the flu. And if you’re under 30, your chances of dying from it are less than getting struck by lightning on a Thursday. (Then there’s the fact that the numbers are inflated like mad.)

So anyway - two guys test positive after a practice - most of the team gets quarantined for 14 days.
Likewise- two guys test positive after a game - most of BOTH teams quarantined for 14 days.
Can’t run a season like that.

https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-nc ... arios.html

Actual facts:

- calculated IFR (Infection Fatality Rate) is 0.65. That is 6x greater than the flu (0.1)
- 18-49 has the largest percentage of hospitalizations right now.
- 2% of the 18-49 that are hospitalized die.
- as posted in other threads, there are long=term lung issues for the people who are hospitalized.

If Covid spreads through an entire team, odds are that 2-3 players get hospitalized. The chance of those 2-3 players being hospitalized dying is very low. The chance that those 2-3 players will never be able to play football at the same level ever again is high. The odds of a coach getting hospitalized and having more severe complications are higher.

Now, of course, 2-3 players on the team might have injuries every year that impact their ability to play at a high level.

But rather than ignore the risk, let's at least acknowledge the risk... if you want to take the position that doubling their risk of having a career-impacting condition is not a big deal, then you are certainly entitled to that position.

Love how it's the fault of the media for reporting what has occurred and not the fault of all politicians regardless of side for botching the response much less all the Karens and Chads who refuse to wear masks because their inconvenience takes precedence over other people's safety.

No. It's the News that is wrong.

This is a suymmary of a recent Fauci meeting. Feel free to point out, precisely, what is wrong within it:

Chickenpox is a virus. Lots of people have had it, and probably don't think about it much once the initial illness has passed. But it stays in your body and lives there forever, and maybe when you're older, you have debilitatingly painful outbreaks of shingles. You don't just get over this virus in a few weeks, never to have another health effect. We know this because it's been around for years, and has been studied medically for years.
Herpes is also a virus. And once someone has it, it stays in your body and lives there forever, and anytime they get a little run down or stressed-out they're going to have an outbreak. Maybe every time you have a big event coming up (school pictures, job interview, big date) you're going to get a cold sore. For the rest of your life. You don't just get over it in a few weeks. We know this because it's been around for years, and been studied medically for years.
HIV is a virus. It attacks the immune system and makes the carrier far more vulnerable to other illnesses. It has a list of symptoms and negative health impacts that goes on and on. It was decades before viable treatments were developed that allowed people to live with a reasonable quality of life. Once you have it, it lives in your body forever and there is no cure. Over time, that takes a toll on the body, putting people living with HIV at greater risk for health conditions such as cardiovascular disease, kidney disease, diabetes, bone disease, liver disease, cognitive disorders, and some types of cancer. We know this because it has been around for years, and had been studied medically for years.
Now with COVID-19, we have a novel virus that spreads rapidly and easily. The full spectrum of symptoms and health effects is only just beginning to be cataloged, much less understood.
So far the symptoms may include:
Fever
Fatigue
Coughing
Pneumonia
Chills/Trembling
Acute respiratory distress
Lung damage (potentially permanent)
Loss of taste (a neurological symptom)
Sore throat
Headaches
Difficulty breathing
Mental confusion
Diarrhea
Nausea or vomiting
Loss of appetite
Strokes have also been reported in some people who have COVID-19 (even in the relatively young)
Swollen eyes
Blood clots
Seizures
Liver damage
Kidney damage
Rash
COVID toes (weird, right?)
People testing positive for COVID-19 have been documented to be sick even after 60 days. Many people are sick for weeks, get better, and then experience a rapid and sudden flare up and get sick all over again. A man in Seattle was hospitalized for 62 days, and while well enough to be released, still has a long road of recovery ahead of him. Not to mention a $1.1 million medical bill.
Then there is MIS-C. Multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children is a condition where different body parts can become inflamed, including the heart, lungs, kidneys, brain, skin, eyes, or gastrointestinal organs. Children with MIS-C may have a fever and various symptoms, including abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, neck pain, rash, bloodshot eyes, or feeling extra tired. While rare, it has caused deaths.
This disease has not been around for years. It has basically been 6 months. No one knows yet the long-term health effects, or how it may present itself years down the road for people who have been exposed. We literally *do not know* what we do not know.
For those in our society who suggest that people being cautious are cowards, for people who refuse to take even the simplest of precautions to protect themselves and those around them, I want to ask, without hyperbole and in all sincerity:
How dare you?
How dare you risk the lives of others so cavalierly. How dare you decide for others that they should welcome exposure as "getting it over with", when literally no one knows who will be the lucky "mild symptoms" case, and who may fall ill and die. Because while we know that some people are more susceptible to suffering a more serious case, we also know that 20 and 30-year-olds have died, marathon runners and fitness nuts have died, children and infants have died.
How dare you behave as though you know more than medical experts, when those same experts acknowledge that there is so much we don't yet know, but with what we DO know, are smart enough to be scared of how easily this is spread, and recommend baseline precautions such as:
Frequent hand-washing
Physical distancing
Reduced social/public contact or interaction
Mask wearing
Covering your cough or sneeze
Avoiding touching your face
Sanitizing frequently touched surfaces
The more things we can all do to mitigate our risk of exposure, the better off we all are, in my opinion. Not only does it flatten the curve and allow health care providers to maintain levels of service that aren't immediately and catastrophically overwhelmed; it also reduces unnecessary suffering and deaths, and buys time for the scientific community to study the virus in order to come to a more full understanding of the breadth of its impacts in both the short and long term.
I reject the notion that it's "just a virus" and we'll all get it eventually. What a careless, lazy, heartless stance.

Watch a lot of CNN, do you?

Say, BTW, your dystopian tome leaves out that about 98-99 percent of cases result in mild to nada symptoms in otherwise healthy folks.

"The media" hasn't scared anyone. On the contrary, I'm extremely grateful that the media has reported facts, shared messages and recommendations and protocols from experts, etc.

What does scare the bejeezus out of me is a virus that has killed nearly 140,000 Americans and thousands more around the world. A friend lost his mom the day before yesterday; as recently as last weekend, she felt fine and they never figured out how she became exposed. Another friend has lost two co-workers in an office of fewer than 50 people. Isolated cases, to be sure, but it's a nasty virus. It is far from fully understood, but research being done around the world is evolving with it. The media's reports are absolutely critical to keeping us safe.

Look, I'm dying to see Buechele hit Roberson on a 60-yard touchdown as much as anyone. But only if it can be done safely, and I'm not yet convinced it can. If games are played and fans are invited to attend, I'll go, probably, but I very well might sit in the 56th row, as far away from people as possible.

You have NO IDEA how many have died from COVID. Fox35 in Orlando just reported on a guy who was killed in a motorcycle accident - and was listed as a COVID death. Several Fla. clinics were also reporting 100 percent POSITIVE cases.

The current hysterical fear from otherwise rational people is unlike anything I’ve ever seen.

European schools are open - with no problems. (There’s your SCIENCE.) But King Clay J and other left-wing local leaders somehow “know best” - and most continue to cower.

Takre reasonable precautions, protect the vulnerable - but good grief, people, we must live life.

1. You're right. I have no idea, and neither do you or anyone else. But the reported cases are confirmed cases, and I can't think of anyone more qualified to estimate those numbers than the scientists researching the virus and the doctors and nurses treating its victims. Are they or their numbers perfect? No. But for every motorcycle accident victim who is labeled a coronavirus vicim, how many people die of coronavirus, but because they hadn't been able to get a test, were listed as having died from some other cause? Plenty. Some (who have more scientific and/or medical degrees than most on here) have estimated that the number of those who have died because of coronavirus could be several times the reported numbers.

2. The concern is unlike any of us have seen, and hopefully, we never go through something like this again.

3. European schools are opening, because in many cases, the number of cases has gone way down. Our numbers continue to skyrocket. Some countries have had to lean on others. Wasn't it Sweden that basically tried to go about business as usual, until Norway and Finland threatened to close those borders unless Sweden got its act together?

4. Political disdain for Judge Clay Jenkins notwithstanding, he has never once said he knows more than anyone else. He is listening to experts who have spent their professional lives studying and researching, and basing his decisions on their findings, not his own.

I hope you and yours are healthy and safe.

Right. If the media says there's a crime spree going on in my neighborhood, it's not the media that is scary. It's the risk of being a victim of crime that is scary, making that another instance in which the media and its reports are incredibly valuable and important.

If there’s a CHANCE someone catches a virus - SHUT IT DOWN!
That’s how much I CARE!

Nobody is saying all chances of catching a virus will or can be eliminated. But taking steps to minimize that chance is a no-brainer. And yes, safety absolutely should be a top priority for everyone.

Do you have locks on your doors? I do. It doesn't eliminate the chance of being burglarized, but it reduces it.
Do you wear a seat belt? I do. It doesn't eliminate the chance I'll die in a crash, but it reduces it.

Wearing a mask and social distancing don't eliminate the chance of catching this (or any other) virus, but they're proven to help reduce that chance. So yes, I'll be wearing a mask and staying a minimum of 6 feet from everyone outside my family.

Actually, if you look at Sweden, there have been issues with their schools. The school you are probably referring to is out of the state of Saxony, which has a lower rate of infection relative to the rest of Germany and Germany as we all know has had a far superior response to COVID-19 than the USA leading to much lower infection rates.

Likewise- two guys test positive after a game - most of BOTH teams quarantined for 14 days.
Can’t run a season like that.

Love how it's the fault of the media for reporting what has occurred and not the fault of all politicians regardless of side for botching the response much less all the Karens and Chads who refuse to wear masks because their inconvenience takes precedence over other people's safety.

No. It's the News that is wrong.

Chads and Karens - wow, you’re soooo hip.

I assume you're a Chad. Anyway your disdain for fellow man is showing. I don't care that you're an SMU fan, you don't belong around anyone if you actually believe anything you've said on this thread. If you're gonna ridicule the small things that can be done to prevent bad things from happening to you or other people then you can leave and never come back.

No hyperbole, get out and take your literally false statements with you. The rate of people dying of COVID already doubled a year of the flu in just months. You disqualify yourself from talking about medical issues and your BS on the thread disqualifies you from participating in something alongside reasonable people.
