The best education graduate program in the state is a three-hour drive south along I-35, but there are some highly ranked options closer to DFW, according to U.S. News & World Report.

U.S. News & World Report's 2021 Best Graduate Schools ranking called the University of Texas the best education graduate program in the state and 15th-best in the country. Harvard University was ranked the best overall.

In North Texas, Southern Methodist University took top billing, coming in at No. 63 nationwide, tied with five other colleges. University of North Texas tied with University of Houston and two other schools for the No. 91 spot.

U.S. News surveyed nearly 400 schools that granted doctoral degrees. Over 250 provided the data needed to be included in the rankings.

The consumer advice magazine used peer and education professionals’ assessments, acceptance rates, GRE scores and faculty resources among other criteria to come up with a weighted score.

SMU received an overall score of 49, with its peer and educational professional assessments ranking them 3.2 and 3.5 out of five respectively. The private university admitted 63 percent of doctoral applicants in 2019. More than 600 students were enrolled in the graduate program in 2019. About $8.9 million in research was funded that same year.

UNT’s program had about the same amount of money for research as SMU, but almost twice as many students. Peer assessments gave UNT a three out of five, while professionals in the field gave it a 3.3 on the same scale.
