Re: Most Outscored FBS Teams in History (Through 7 Games)I have faith that we will set a new record.
Re: Most Outscored FBS Teams in History (Through 7 Games)
I really don't see it happening, or if it does it will need an asterisk and explanation. Our 1916 team played only 10 games and lost by an average margin of almost 43 points per game. This team is losing by 41 points per game but is now entering the "soft" part of the schedule. When you look at some of our worst years post death penalty, our worst average margin of defeat was 28 points. Even the 2003 team that went 0-12 lost by an average margin of 21 points and lost to TCU by 7, Baylor by 3 and UTEP by only 2 points. This would appear to be BY FAR the worst team since the death penalty, but I don't see them comparing to that original SMU football team that lost to Rice 146-3. Imagine how disappointed the Rice defense was to give up that FG
Re: Most Outscored FBS Teams in History (Through 7 Games)We might have lost by 143, but at least they didn't get the shutout! Hopefully SMU kicked a field goal on 4th & 3 with 2:30 left to play in the 4th qtr from the opponents 13 yard line.

Re: Most Outscored FBS Teams in History (Through 7 Games)
Oddly enough, SMU actually led the game 3-0 and Rice had to come back to win. Link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_100-point_games_in_college_football. [See third paragraph]. So, at least the 1916 team had a lead at one point during a game, which is something the 2014 team hasn't had yet. "We will win championships on the Hilltop" - Rick Hart - September 8, 2014

Damn. Now that's saying something!! Really is pretty crazy when you think about 140 years of college football history. Thanks for the research. CUSH-LASH!!
Re: Most Outscored FBS Teams in History (Through 7 Games)That 1918 Georgia Tech team with three 100+ point games is ridiculous.

Re: Most Outscored FBS Teams in History (Through 7 Games)I can remember when SWC coverage in general and SMU in particular was scant in my present location. I subscribed to the Dallas papers at times, even though the news was very stale when the papers arrived. There were more night games and the radio reception better then but it was always hard to tune a station that carried games in Texas.
It is ironic that things are so different today when the product is so poor. But I'll watch because it was often so rare. The 2014 Mustangs may end up with a worse point differential than in 1916 but we have improved so far as the outcomes against ATM and Baylor are concerned. They also tied two games. Maybe this season's record will deserve a footnote because the 1916 team had only a ten game schedule. But I wonder. Are ALL of the 2014 games going to be televised? Has any other program lost every game televised during a season? Will SMU be the only team ever to lose twelve games on TV? One more thing. That 1916 SMU team played games at something called Armstrong Field. Was that the site where Ownby and the present stadium are located, or on the grounds of the present day elementary school in Park Cities?
Re: Most Outscored FBS Teams in History (Through 7 Games)SMU's baseball field was Armstrong Field-wasn't it. Located where track then soccer field is today. Homeplate was in Northwest corner
