Today Larry Brown has said the 3-point shot should be abolished and he doesn’t understand NCAA tourney criteria.

So dumb. The one thing about LB that bugs me is his refusal to incorporate analytics into his coaching decisions.

For the record, LB was joking when he said that. I believe ESPNU is airing the roundtable at noon.

What does Larry's quote have to do with analytics?

Larry may have been joking for part of that, but he did come off as quite contrarian from everyone else. While everyone was vouching for a shorter shot clock he was saying the opposite. That's fine with me. Most of us know on here that he is the epitome of basketball old school, but you could see all the other coaches smiling and rolling their eyes when Larry went on his (lets be real) old man rant.

Still love LB, just on observation.

What does Larry's quote have to do with analytics?

Teams that emphasize the utilization of analytics into game planning are taking more 3's and less mid-range shots. Analytics has allowed front offices/coaches to determine the most efficient shots (lay-ups and threes). In fact, forward-thinking Houston GM Daryl Morey used his D-League affiliate as a guinea pig by only allowing them to shoot lay-ups and 3s.

Per Zach Lowe:
"As Smith notes, there has always been grumbling among old-school types about the 3-pointer — our dads and grandpas lamenting how those impudent youngsters only care about 3s and dunks, since those highlight plays get them on SportsCenter. But new, more nuanced concerns are starting to bubble up about the dominance of the 3-pointer. One strain centers on the consequences of the idea that math has basically solved basketball. Analytics has won out in shot selection. Just about everyone in the NBA, from scouts to head coaches to GMs, understands that long 2-point shots are bad and 3s are good. There is a strong correlation between 3-point attempts and team scoring efficiency, and an even more specific correlation between the number of short corner 3s a team attempts and its overall points per possession."

Per Nylon Calculus:
"Three-pointers are undeniably more efficient than long two-pointers. There is evidence that the extra spacing of having three point shooters on the court opens space and helps get shots at the rim. Three-point shots may also lead to more offensive rebounds, at least than long and mid-range twos."

i dont think larry is telling our guys not to shoot threes - we shoot as many as anyone.

He uses analytics plenty - figure out where their weak spot is and grind on it like there is no tomorrow, and while you do that create points with a crushing defense.

I think stats show that we do not shoot as many 3 as most others. LB is more of a take it to the hole and get fouled for your 3 point play kind of coach.

You misunderstood. He meant take the three pointer out of the rules.

Here are the stats. SMU ranks 346th out of 351 teams in per game 3 point attempts. That is near the bottom. So they actually do not shoot as many as anyone.
