Hours after the NCAA announced a postseason ban for the Southern Methodist University men’s basketball team and a nine-game suspension for head coach Larry Brown on Tuesday morning, a hastily painted white sheet hung from the porch of the Kappa Alpha Order fraternity house bearing the phrase “Free Larry.â€
The brothers who put up the sign declined to comment.
“It pretty much speaks for itself,†one said.
And in many ways it spoke for much of the student body at the University Park campus.
Unfair. Depressing. Ridiculous, they lamented.

Despite the disappointment and anger directed at the NCAA, students had plenty of warm feelings for Brown, who’s brought a renewed energy and hope for success to campus since being hired in 2012.
“He’s a great coach,†said sophomore Caroline Moss, who remembers Brown handing out doughnuts to students lined up outside Moody Coliseum. “He loves the school and he loves the students.â€
