SMU Wins 3-0 At UCF, Claims Sole Possession Of First After First Round

ORLANDO, Fla. (SMU) – The SMU volleyball team won 3-0 (25-16, 25-22, 25-21) at UCF Sunday afternoon, with Katie Hegarty scoring 11 kills with 14 digs to lead the Mustangs. With the win, SMU improved to 16-6, 9-1 in the American Athletic Conference, and claimed sole possession of first place in the conference with a Temple win at Cincinnati.

The Mustangs trailed 15-13 in the third set, but out-scored UCF (17-6, 7-3 The American) 12-6 down the stretch to win 25-21 and complete the sweep, SMU's ninth of the season and third in conference matches.

Kristen Stehling scored nine kills, hitting a match-high .444, and also recorded three block assists. Janelle Giordano and Hegarty also posted three block assists, with SMU recording seven blocks as a team. Lauren Mills scored nine kills, and Giordano and Brittany Adamseach added eight kills in the win. Morgan Heise tallied a match-high 18 digs. Kendall Patterson finished with 37 assists, leading SMU to a .279 attack percentage as a team.

The Mustangs scored the first five points of the opening set and never gave up the advantage, going on to win 25-16. SMU scored on four blocks, and held UCF to a .049 attack percentage in the first set, recording 23 digs, eight by Hegarty.

SMU edged out the Knights in the second set, holding on for a 25-22 win to take a 2-0 lead in the match. With a 23-19 lead, UCF scored three straight points to get within one point, 23-22. SMU rallied to score the next two points and close out the set. The Mustangs scored the first three points, but what appeared to be a Stehling kill that would have made the lead 4-0, was ruled a replay after the Knights were unable to play the ball in the bench area. The momentum swing allowed the Knights to score the next two points. Neither team led by more than two points again until SMU's late run led to a four-point lead.

The Mustangs return home to host Houston in Moody Coliseum Friday at 7 p.m. SMU also hosts Tulane Sunday at 1 p.m.
