SMU scored three unanswered points at the end of the fifth set for a 16-14 win, ending the match to hold onto a one-match lead in the American Athletic Conference. The Mustangs took a two-point lead early in the set, 4-2, and the two teams traded points on the next 14 serves before Tulane (14-10, 6-6 The American) rallied for three straight points to take a 12-11 lead. The Green Wave were first to 14, but SMU kept them from scoring the winning point, setting up the late heroics. Giordano and Hegarty teamed up for a block on match point for SMU.

The Green Wave forced a fifth set with a 25-22 win in the fourth set. Nearly identical to the third set, SMU trailed by three before tying the score, 20-20. SMU pushed the lead to seven, 19-12, and kept the margin at seven at the end, with Giordano and Hegarty teaming up for a block for the third time to end the set.

In the second set, SMU rallied to erase a three-point deficit late, and completed the comeback with a kill from Giordano and a block by Adams and Stehling to win 28-26, taking a 2-0 lead in the match.
