Nicol Wins Silver, Three Mustangs Advance At World Championships

ONTARIO, Canada (SMU) – Mustang alum Rachel Nicol continued her success on the international stage winning silver as part of Canada's 4x100-meter medley relay team at the 13th FINA World Short Course Championships at the WFCU Center. Nine Mustangs represented seven countries at the event, including Nicol who swam for the host country.

Following a fourth-place performance in the opening heats of the relay, Nicol and Canada closed the Championships with a time of 3:48.87, good for the Canadian record. The Finals appearance was the second of the Championships for the former Mustang standout, as she advanced to 100-meter breaststroke Finals, as she did at the Rio Olympic Games in August. Nicol posted a 1:05.48 to place eighth. Her time of 1:05.10 in the semifinals was a personal best. She also competed in the 50-meter distance, placing 10th in semifinals.

Representing Colombia, Isabella Arcila competed in a pair of semifinals, the 100-meter freestyle and 50-meter backstroke. Arcila's highest placement of 13th came in the 50 back where she posted a National Record time of 26.72. She was 16th in the 100 free (53.98). Her time of 53.70 in heats re-set the National standard.

Arcila also registered National Records in heats of the 50-meter freestyle (24.84) and 100-meter backstroke (58.30), and was just off the time in the 100-meter individual medley (1:01.98).

Also advancing out of heats at the Championships was Lithuania's Mindaugas Sadauskas, doing so in both the 50-meter butterfly and as part of the 4x50-meter medley relay team. Sadauskas clocked a 21.10 free split to help Lithuania to a 1:35.00 for eighth. He also came in under the National Record in the 50-fly semis at 22.87.

Six additional Mustangs competed in heats at the Championships including current Mustangs Matea Samardzic (Croatia) and Jonathan Gomez (Colombia). Samardzic placed 19th in the 200-meter backstroke and 31st in the 100 distance, while Gomez was 14th in 200-meter butterfly heats and 24th in the 400-meter individual medley.

SMU assistant coach Nina Rangelova (Bulgaria) took on the field in both the 50- and 100-meter freestyle, as well as the 100-meter individual medley. She placed 24th in the 100 IM and 35th in both freestyle events.

Nathalie Lindborg helped Sweden to ninth and 10th place finishes in the 4x50 free relay and 4x100 medley relay, respectively, as well as 13th in the mixed 4x50 free relay with Mustang Robin Andreasson. Individually, she competed in the 50 free (25.08) and 100 free (55.63).

Andreasson was also part of Sweden's 4x50 free relay team that placed ninth, narrowly missing out on Finals, as well as the 4x100 free team that finished 11th. He finished 43rd in 50 free prelims.

Breaststroke specialist Julian Fletcher swam for Bermuda in Windsor finishing 54th (50 breast) and 55th (100 breast), and was 60th in the 100 IM.
