Typically you do not apply until the end of eligibility.

its perfunctory for the first medical redshirt as long as medical paperwork is in order and he played less than 30% of games all in first half of season-he meets the requirements of the rule

its when you apply for a 6th year like Davis that you don't find out until after final season is over. In that case you need to miss the required playing time in 2 different seasons

I agree the guides are pretty clear but don't you still wait until the end of normal playing time to apply or do you do it now?

Well he played in only 2 of first 6 games due to injury so looks like he meets the requirement for it.

I knew that he got hurt and that he was missed but what was his injury? Any word on his rehab? Is a good recovery expected?

He recovered from the leg injury and then busted up a shoulder I believe on his return.

No not for the first time medical redshirt-you apply after the season of injury and its usually pretty clear whether standards have been met. Rarely seen one of those denied
