Or you take the buyout money and go get the next Chad Morris. What you people who are so willing to spend others money don't understand is that once we pay Chad Morris $5M the bar is then set. You really think the next coach isn't going to expect that? What if we go 5-7 next year and take a slight step back or even worse have a catastrophic year like Tulsa just had? Remember when Phillip Montgomery was the hot name in G5? Wonder why we're not hearing about him this year despite this being his third year and most of the roster being his guys? Chad Morris is being paid well for the results he's given to SMU. If you guys want to hand over $5M and declare "Mission Accomplished" then go right ahead. Write the check. Just know that the bar will only go up from there.

I don't disagree with anything you said. I think there is a good chance we could step back next year. Not sure. But I know continuity of leadership, expectations and system are important. If an assistant can provide that and we feel confident in that then take the gamble. But I would like to eventually be the school that doesnt lose coaches to better programs like CoogHi does. I think philosophically you're talking about a different approach to get there but could work.

The SMU boosters paying him can surely count. And they've apparently decided paying him more than any other G5 coach, for his average results to date, is more than fair. If some desperate P5 school, with a lot deeper pockets and revenue streams, is willing to overpay him at this point........more power to them. Sounds completely reasonable.......except to Stallion......who is apparently coming unglued in the midst of message board exhaustion!

IMO many of you are arguing about extremes. hccm has taken us from 1-11 to 7-5. not great but also not bad considering what he started with. I believe it is important to let him and his staff know that they are appreciated and we like the job they are doing. That may not always be in the form of dollars but perhaps other benefits or maybe just a raise for some of his staff. My experience has been that if you treat your employees well they will be more hesitant to look for other opportunities.

It's like some of y'all are now actively ignoring how badly June ran the program into a ditch. The dude wouldn't even leave campus to recruit LOCAL high school kids. His last few years were essentially a slow moving death penalty.

What's the negative on Les Miles? He seems like a good suggestion to me. And he might stay a while if successful. I do bet Chad stays next year, but is gone the following year. With some respectable improvement in D, he could have a chance at the Conf. Champ. with his offensive returners.

UH has seen Sumlin, Briles, and Herman all leave the program for P5 jobs and maintained a relatively high level of success. TCU's Patterson is not the only "model" for a G5 to keep the program relevant. The university and its boosters have shown a commitment to paying at the very top end of the AAC for a head coach. We pay more for Chad Morris than Memphis, Navy, Houston, Central Florida, and South Florida who all finished ahead of us this year.
If Chad Morris decides to leave for any school other than Texas A&M we will receive a sizeable buyout. The job is no longer perceived as a career killer or one that will be cheap. If you don't think there will be a long line of highly qualified and very desirable coaches who want be here then you're thinking pre-2008 SMU. Dynamics have changed.

Yep it was in a ditch, just like a lot of other schools. Plenty of other coaches turn programs around as quickly, or quicker than Morris has. Let's stop buying into the Stallion narrative that the guy walks on water. He's done a good job, not great.

Also, why give the guy a giant raise when it is blatantly obvious he is ready to leave for the first decent P5 job offered?
Frankly he hasn't earned a raise this year. SMU seems to like their hand right now. The rest of the coaching world can see they're being more than fair with Morris right now. If he has a big year next year, he's gone anyways, and they just saved a few million bucks. Maybe he goes 6-6, his stock does a Montgomery, and they just saved a few million bucks. Win/Win

UCF is now offering Frost more than 4 Million a year-I bet they'd go higher to keep him. http://www.orlandosentinel.com/sports/u ... story.htmlMemphis is similarly working on a big raise for Norvell-details were not disclosed by local paper but they pointed out that Memphis offered a 1.1 Million raise to 2.5 Million to his predecessor 3 years ago https://www.seccountry.com/arkansas/mem ... ke-norvellCrickets about whether SMU making any attempts to keep Morris at that "great job" as SMT reports where he can live in Highland Park, recruit outside his front porch and keep his kid at HP where he'll probably start next year. If its just a great job give Morris something to think about-maybe he waits 1-2 years before jumping to an even better job

SMT's logic would have let Ron Meyer leave before SIGNING Eric Dickerson/Craig James. In fact, even if they had already committed by December of Meyer's 4th recruiting Class (they hadn't yet) they likely would have decommitted as soon as Meyer left along with Michael Carter, Russell Carter, and all the rest.
Meyer has an even worse record than Morris after 3 years
11-21-1 v 14-22 No Bowls v 1 Bowl Only +1/2 game from predecessor v. +6 from predecessor
Just think of all the Money we could have saved-that SMT is such a genius-just plug anybody in at Head Coach-this is such a great job. We've had such a great Parade of Coaches willing to take this job with its 8,000 fanbase. Sounds like Jerry Jones-he's going to die before he finds his next "Right Guy"
SMU already has the "Right Guy" that can at least take us to the Access Bowl and nobody is lifting a finger to keep him. Short sighted thinking-saving a few bucks in exchange for losing the Pony Express Era

Sadly this is going to be our problem. Public schools (Memphis and UCF) are subsidized by tax payer funds to at least cover all non-sport related items, which we don’t have that luxury being obviously private. We are so dependent on private donations that it’s hard to easily call in a revolver to give Chad more money. It has to be the reason why we couldn’t can JJ when he gave up. We would have to buy him out plus pay for a new coach.
Anyways, hopefully we keep Chad which I think we will and we will get to a 9-3 season and he moves on and someone picks up and takes us to a NY6 bowl.

While a nice gesture, the raises they are discussing are not going keep Frost from Nebraska/Florida State/Arkansas/Tennessee. If those schools want their (or our) coach, they don’t have enough money to stop it. Although not a perfect relationship, Chad is very well paid compared to G5 peers and construction on the ipf starts in the Spring. If we want to make him happy, we need to give him a budget to hire a top notch defensive coaching staff. That will get him to the 10-11 wins he needs to be the Top candidate for elite P5 jobs in 1-2 years.
Do unto others before they do unto you!!

It's almost like some of y'all are watching the train wrecking into the dumpster fire in Tenn and thinking to yourself... "I wish SMU had some of that intellectual excellence here amongst our fanbase!"
Find out what Chad wants, decided if it exceeds the current perceived market value for his brand and his impact, then make the call.
Toothless in Knoxville is not a good look.

And by Dodge logic Tulsa should’ve given Montgomery a five year extension at 4-5M a year last year before going 2-9 in the third year of his program.
Lunacy.
