More proof positive that Morris recruiting was being overrated by you know who. 3 years with little to no improvement, and a largely bare cupboard, on the defensive side of the ball. Morris was slick, gotta give him credit.
Ehh... I think that's more of an indictment of Texas HS football than it is of CM's defensive recruitment. Defense in Texas HS football straight sucks. Almost all the best players are moved to offense. We can produce the occasional skill players but for the most part there isn't a single school that uses Texas as it's main recruiting base with a consistently good defense. TCU tends to be the best in most years and even they really aren't all that great.
You are mostly right about that. Texas does produce some good defensive backs and sometimes an LB in the NFL but defensive linemen from Texas that played their university ball in the Southwest is few and far between. Ed Oliver will be the next but it has been a long time between drinks. Looking at the Texas HS stats the larger high school are throwing the ball more and running less, so interior defensive linemen are not developed in any quantity. New coaches might have to go out of state to get good interior defensive linemen.

Golding or Guidry would be good choices imo. Or get someone from TCU.

Dykes has said himself that he is willing to adjust his schemes to fit his personnel and he just came from TCU. If we hire a 4-2-5 guy and our transfer from A&M pans out then it seems to me that all he has to do is find one more playmaker. Is that a possible solution?
The 4-2-5 relies on the "star" position. We haven't found that fit yet. Mitchell wasn't quick enough to cover. You have to have someone big enough to play run and quick enough to cover. A safety hybrid almost. McQueen might end up being that guy, but we have struggled at that spot. Mitchell made a lot of plays but he was a liability in coverage.

NFL caliber interior d lineman and cornerbacks are born with the talent. Sure that talent has to be cultivated but you'll never coach up someone to do the job who wasn't born with the natural talent.

Price is staying put in Aggieland.
ANYONE that will teach and recruit corners that giving 10 yard cushions off the LOS will be an improvement.

The LA Ragin Cajuns just hired Billy Napier as their head coach. If that school has the clout/money for this hire, we should be able to get a decent D.C.

http://cruathletics.com/coaches.aspx?rc ... h=footballHere's a an outside-the-box candidate. Been at MHB for a while, and done a helluva job, but it may be too big of a jump for him. Larry Harmon, DC, Mary Hardin-Baylor "Larry Harmon is in his 15th season as UMHB’s defensive coordinator after spending three years coaching the Cru secondary. During his tenure as defensive coordinator, the UMHB defense has ranked among the nation’s best in total defense, scoring defense, rushing defense and pass efficiency defense. The Cru has also broken every major school defensive record since Coach Harmon joined the UMHB coaching staff. Under Harmon’s direction, the Cru defense has produced ten AFCA All-Americans and 11 ASC Defensive Players of the Year. Last year, The Cru led the ASC in total defense, scoring defense, rushing defense and interceptions and tied for second in sacks. UMHB also led the nation in rushing defense in 2006. In addition to his defensive coordinator duties, Coach Harmon also works with UMHB’s kick return and kick coverage teams."

Out of respect for the prior staff (if they earned it or not) I would expect that any leftovers get interviewed. Even if you know you have no intent of hiring them or already have someone else lined up.
The "teflon" coach in every respect ! So glad to have coach Dykes !

IIRC Dykes mentioned that he would basically have a full staff after his game on the 20th. It might mean that VM is not the DC and Dykes wants to keep him interested until after the bowl game. I hope SD realizes that he needs not only some really good coaches, especially on the D side but also stud recruiters who will appeal to hs. prospects.

He has kept the defensive coaches because we need them to coach in the bowl game. You can only have 10 coaches on your staff so he cannot hire any others until he can get rid of some of the current staff. He may or may not keep some of the current defensive guys but his hands are tied until after the 20th.

If that were true, you’d have NFL scouts on elementary school playgrounds.
