Apparently Sonny didn't get the memo from Stallion about how awesome Chad was at recruiting.

I would guess he's scrambling furiously behind the scenes for one of the P5 grad transfers or best remaining Juco QB's. Pretty weak group for the supposed QB guru. William Brown (ala skinny DJ Gillins) will never make it in Sonny's pass happy offense either. Wade Smith QB 5-11 170 FR-HS Austin, Texas / Bowie Rafe Peavey QB 6-1 204 JR-TR Bolivar, Mo. / Arkansas / Bolivar HS D.J. Gillins QB 6-3 206 JR-JC Jacksonville, Fla. / Pearl River CC / Wisconsin / Ribault Ben Hicks QB 6-1 203 RS-SO-1L Waco, Texas / Midway Matthew Maggi QB 6-1 184 FR-HS Houston, Texas / Kinkaid Dylan Beiersdorf QB 6-3 188 FR-HS Dallas, Texas / Prestonwood Christian Academy Austin Upshaw QB 6-1 200 FR-HS La Porte, Texas / La Porte

OMG....what it is going on? I thought Chad was "the recruiter of all recruiters"? And now Sonny is saying "No Thanks" to these Mr. Whataburger recruits? Do these Chad recruits that SD is running off have offers from big schools?

I'm sure Stallion will be along shortly with a long winded 'explanation'......or some more Tamerik Williams stats.

We have a ton of young inexperienced OL who were highly regarded recruits. Adding some JUCO upperclassmen to compete is the right way to go...

Anyone have any info on Wade, Matthew or Dylan? Never heard of them. Were any preferred walkons with a good high school career? I wonder if Upshaw could end up playing another position if he doesn’t end up starting at QB. Anyone know how he has looked in practice?

That's funny. But, to be fair, as others have suggested it's more probable the guys Sonny is passing on aren't necessarily due to talent as much as fit to scheme. As much fun as it might be to hate the guy no longer on your team, I'm on the "had Chad stayed we'd continue to see upward progression" side of this argument.

Somebody predicted the 'fit to scheme' excuses right when Morris left, can't remember who it was. Stallion was first on that bandwagon of course, to protect his Morris fanboy crush. The fit to scheme arguments are way overblown....can they play football or not? Today on the radio, Dykes specifically mentioned his first problem with this Morris team. There is a serious lack of size in the trenches, both the OL and DL. Is SMU the only P5/G5 program in the country without a 300lb scholarship OLineman on the roster? No matter the talent, Howerton at 260 is going to get pushed around at this level. Ali at 270 is the same weight he was in high school. Smith 272, etc, etc. What was the S&C coach doing with these guys? It sounds like Sonny is trying to add 2 or 3 Juco big boys to the DL after looking at those lightweights. The 2 biggest guys, Mclaurin at 319, and Biggurs at 288, apparently can't play. Fit to scheme is an excuse for guys not ready to play at this level, or cover for guys who were overrated because of all the Morris recruiting guru smoke blown around here. Will be really interesting to see what Dykes comes up with on signing day, it seems he's desperately scouring the Juco ranks in search of help in the trenches.

Fit to scheme *can* be an excuse for sure. But it is real. Take the QB position -- if you could only take one of two, which do you want: an all-world classic pro-style guy or an all-world athletic type who can throw the well but will eat you up by ducking a sack or two and turning it into a 20 yard gain? Depends in good part on what kind of offense you plan to run. If you don't get to choose which all-world guy, of course you build your offense around the one guy you do get.

What radio show was Sonny on? There is no question though, after watching five practices going into that bowl game; Sonny D was shocked at the lack of size on both sides of the ball. The undeniable failure of three recruiting classes on the defensive side of the ball...leaves us almost desperate.

I remember seeing a pattern with a lot of Chad's early recruits and several of them (and their H.S. coaches) talked about how passionate they were about playing football and also that they were still growing. Hope that is the case and that some of the guys who are being written off as recruiting "misses" are significant contributors by the time they reach their Jr and Sr seasons. By their 4th and 5th year in the program if they are not contributing on the field...then yes, I would agree those were "misses" but SMU is not going to recruit a lot of guys who will go pro after 3 years so it is still too early to write some of these guys off.
