Five Student-Athletes To Join The Mustangs In The Fall Of 2017

May 1, 2017

DALLAS (SMU) – SMU head coach Cathy Casey announced today the addition of five student-athletes to join the Mustangs track and field team in the fall of 2017.

The 2017 recruiting class consists of Cassie Ackemann, Atipa Mabonga, Grace Graves, Tess Misgen and Ashton Woods.

The latest addition to this crop of Mustangs is not only diverse in the events they fill, the group also spans from three different states as well New Zealand. The class is made up of two distance runners (Graves and Misgen), two jumpers (Ackemann and Mabonga) and a multi-event athlete/hurdler (Woods).

"I can’t wait to have this group of extremely talented young women join the Mustangs this fall,” Casey said. “This class will not only represent SMU well athletically, but also in the classroom. I feel my staff and I did well to address the needs of the program to continue the tradition of excellence here at SMU.”

Cassie Ackemann | Ben Lomond, Calif. | San Lorenzo Valley HS | Jumps
Personal Bests: 5-10 (High Jump), 38-8.25 (Triple Jump)
A four-year letterwinner under head coach Jay Avenmarg at San Lorenzo Valley High School in Felton, Calif….Two-time California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) state meet finalist in the high jump (2015, 2016)…Set a personal best of 5-10 in the high jump to win the Soquel Invitational…Won the high jump (5-8) at the 57th Annual Golden West Invitational in the high jump with her summer track club, Santa Cruz Track Club (SCTC)…Won the high jump (5-9) at the 2016 USATF Region 16 Junior Olympic Championships…Set a personal best winning the triple jump (38-8.25) at the 2017 Top 8 Track Classic…Was the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League high jump champion (2016) and the 2016 CIF Central Coast high jump champion…Named the 2016 San Lorenzo Valley High School Female Athlete of the Year…Named the team’s ‘Field MVP’ in 2014, 2015, 2016…Named the 2016 SCTC High School Field Athlete of the Year… Member of the National Honor Society (2014-17) and the California Scholarship Federation (2013-2017)…Academically, ranked in the top-10 of her class.

Atipa Mabonga | Otautau, New Zealand | Central Southland College | Jumps
Personal Bests: 41-1.74 (Triple Jump), 19-3.5 (Long Jump)
Coached by Lance Smith of the Otautau Athletics Club in New Zealand…Broke the Southland senior and U-20 record in triple jump with a leap of 41-1.74 (12.52m) to win the 2017 U-20 Australian Athletics Championships…Won the U-20 triple jump at the 2017 New Zealand Track & Field Championships with a mark of 40-6.25 (12.35m) and the New Zealand Secondary Schools Championships with a jump of 40-11.5 (12.48m)…Two-time triple jump silver medalist at the Oceani Athletics Championships (2014, 2015)…Claimed the bronze in the U-20 long jump at the 2017 New Zealand Track & Field Championships…Set a personal record of 19-3.5 (5.88m) in the long jump to win the 2015 South Island Championships…Was the 2015 Oceania Youth Championships gold medalist in the long jump leaping 19-3.25 (5.87m)…Named to the New Zealand team, along with current Mustang Hannah Miller, that will compete at the 2017 Oceania Athletics Championships (June 28-July 1) in Suva, Fiji…Recipient of the Southland Youthmark Award…Selected to the NZ High Performance Sport “Pathway to Podium” Academy.

A four-year letterwinner under head coach Andrew Cook at Flower Mound High School in Flower Mound, Texas…Finished ninth at the 2015 University Interscholastic League (UIL) 6A District 5 cross country meet …Member of the 4th place distance medley relay team (12:28.91) at the 2017 Texas Relays…Earned the Runner Jaguar Award and the Jammin’ Jag Award…Participated in the Nike Running Camp in Malibu, Calif….Graduated Magna Cum Laude.

A four-year letterwinner under coaches Jeff Wachter and Lauren Bristol at Shakopee High School in Shakopee, Minnesota…Named team captain junior and senior year (2016 and 2017)…2014 MSHSL Class AA 1600m State Champion (4:50.78)...Named the 2014 Aspire Athlete of the Week…2015 MSHSL Class AA State 1600m Runner-Up in a personal best time of 4:48.54… School record holder in the 800m, 1600m, and as a member of the 4x800m, 4x1600m, sprint and distance medley relays…Three-time cross country team MVP…Recorded three top-10 finishes at the MSHSL Class AA State Cross Country Championship (10th–2013, 3rd–2014, 4th–2016)…Two-time conference and section cross country champion…Four-time Academic All State…Named to the A-Honor Roll (7th – 12th)…Member of the SHARP (Shakopee Academic Recognition Program) program (7th –12 th).

A four-year letterwiner under coach Ychlindria Spears-Dolce at Douglas MacArthur High School in San Antonio, Texas…Won three events at the 2017 District 26-6A Championship, including the long jump with a personal best jump of 18-4….Set a personal best in both the 100m (14.82) and 300m hurdles (43.11) at the 2017 UIL 6A Region IV Championships…2014 district, area and regional qualifier in the long jump and 400m…Placed 13th in the heptathlon while competing under coach Undrae Davis with the San Antonio Blazers at both the 2015 and 2016 AAU Junior Olympic Games…Also lettered three years in soccer and was named All-District and helped the team reach the state semifinals in 2016…Member of the National Honor Society…Academically, ranked top-5 in her class…AP Scholar.

I haven't seen a 2018-19 women's track signing group. Curious if they signed any sprinters. It appears none were in the 2017-18 class. Do they have walk-ons as well? I believe T&F plus XC shares 18 scholarships.
