AP: Mustangs Take Down Georgetown On The Road, 81-73

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Jahmal McMurray scored 19 points, Isiaha Mike and Ethan Chargois had 17 apiece and SMU defeated Georgetown 81-73 on Saturday.

McMurray had four 3-pointers and Chargois three as the Mustangs (7-4) went 10 of 25 from distance while the Hoyas (7-3) were 4 of 18.

SMU went on a 15-2 run with Nat Dixon, who started it with two 3-pointers, scoring all 11 of his points for a 23-17 lead. The Mustangs never trailed after that.

McMurray converted all three free throws in the final minute for a 39-34 halftime lead and hit a 3 as the Mustangs scored the first five of the second half. The lead was 11 when the Hoyas reeled off 11 straight and it stayed close the rest of the way.

SMU made 5 of 6 from the foul line in the final minute while Georgetown, which shot 40 percent for the game, missed its last three shots and was 1 of 8 in the final six minutes.

Jessie Govan had 17 and James Akinjo 16 for Georgetown.

It was only the second meeting ever, the first coming in the second round of the 1984 NCAA Tournament in Pullman, Washington, when the Hoyas won 37-36 behind current coach Patrick Ewing's 10 points.

From the Washington Post:

Georgetown basketball falls to SMU with what Ewing calls ‘a total breakdown’ on defense
By Ava Wallace

The Georgetown Hoyas had plenty of reason to be riled up for Saturday afternoon’s game at Capital One Arena.

Southern Methodist was the last of the Hoyas’ three expected tests of the nonconference schedule, following games with Illinois and Syracuse. Georgetown was looking to take out some frustration in its first game after a devastating loss to the Orange last weekend. And a boisterous announced crowd of 6,763 made Saturday’s matchup feel like the Hoyas’ first proper home game; it wasn’t the biggest of the season, falling a bit short of the attendance against Campbell two days after Thanksgiving, but it was the loudest by far.

Yet Georgetown looked out of sorts from the moment it stepped onto the court. The Hoyas’ defense let them down, and their clunky offense failed to make up the difference in an 81-73 loss, their first defeat of the season at home.

Ewing compliment? Teams like this are the ones we will face in the Big East.

I have cautiously renewed optimism after that game. Good win.

While watching my recording of the game, I saw that the pricey seats behind the benches were very empty for the first 10 minutes of the game. It filled in pretty well by the second half, but never saw the regular seating to get an idea of the crowd size.

Seems like even at a major basketball school like Georgetown, they have trouble getting butts in the seats. Was reading an article about college football, and the highest percentage of ticket holders that get scanned in to the stadium is around 76%, with the 60's being more the norm. You see that at the pro football and bball games as well.

To me, the pull of other sports / activities, and the TV coverage of most teams, makes the future for sports attendance not so bright.
