When is the NFL going to change their archaic overtime rules

Postby gostangs » Sun Jan 20, 2019 10:33 pm

The patriot win doesn’t even feel legitimate due to the terrible “first to score” overtime rule. I just don’t understand how they haven’t changed to the much superior college rule.

Cmon CLARK - time to rally the intelligent owners and get this changed.

Just changed in 2012, so I wouldn't call it "archaic". https://bleacherreport.com/articles/112 ... es-in-2012

You have to find a way for each team to have the ball at least once. I hate it when a game is decided by a coin toss.

The part that is archaic, and just plain dumb and unfair, is where the first TD can win it. That didn't change. They are missing out on so much more interesting drama but not adopting the college system.

The NFL has done everything to make the overtime rules totally unnecessary and stupid. The overtime rule should be one sentence: " Each team will receive a minimum of one ( 1 ) offensive possession all existing rules remain in place." A possession defined as one touch with full possession control. For example in the NE/Chiefs game: Pats score TD in OT and elect to kick extra point for 7 pt. lead ( they have option for 2); Chiefs must receive one possession; they also score a TD and now face decision to tie with 1 or go for 2 and win ( drama, entertainment, excitement/ no excuses if they later lose). Chiefs choose to tie. At this time: next score wins as each team has had an equal possession chance. You can run any other scenarios off this and it works. Both kick field goals: next score wins. Bottom line is that each team is afforded at least one offensive chance and each team afforded at least one defensive stop opportunity which levels the playing field; highest score or next score wins.

So who do you root for, the team that got there on a coin toss or the team that got there on a bad call? #yawn

Follow my formula and the blow call is slightly diminished.
