Men's Golf

I did not know the Men's team was so highly rated, #6! (Golfstat) Good for them and good luck this Spring. Bring home the AAC Championship for us Mustang fans.

Amazing what a couple of good recruiting classes can do for a program.

Yes, the golf program has had several excellent recruiting classes and more to come. Next year take a peek at the tennis program who has a great new coach and some highly regarded 5 star kids coming in to launch that program into a top program.

Does anyone know what happened to Noah Goodwin? I know he got hurt several weeks ago at the Stanford tournament. I was hoping he would be back by now. It seems like he could have helped us win the conference championship if he had participated.

I have been checking in here daily hoping to find out the same thing. I haven't seen a thing about it and have tried google with no luck as well. Hopefully he will be back in time for the NCAA Tournament.
When will I start feeling stimulated??

Have to wonder whether Noah could have helped make up the 12 shots we needed to catch Memphis for the AAC Title. Meissner had a great tourney and blew the field away but with no other SMU golfers finishing under par, I would think Noah could have been a difference maker. No word on whether he might be back for the NCAA Regionals

Noah had a right shoulder injury and received multiple cortisone injections since the Stanford tournament. He started hitting golf balls on Tuesday and has not experienced pain. If the current rehabilitation plan continues to work, he will play Regionals. Mac Meissner was awesome on a very difficult golf course!

I’m curious what college golf and recruits think about SMU’s facilities at Trinity Forest and the course itself?

This is a great question. The TF practice facilities/golf course are first class. The short course, practice range, and golf course will allow a golfer to get better. Are recruits looking at that? Absolutely! The building with locker rooms/hitting bays/weight room is equally outstanding. With the small membership at TF, SMU players have virtually free access to the course. There have been several modifications (practice putting greens have been revamped and enlarged) made since the initial opening which demonstrates a commitment to “get it right.”

It is important to understand that the TF course is very different. It is a links course that requires knowledge how to play. It is different. A golf coach/team coming to the TF Invitational (SMU Men’s tournament) may or may not like that because it is so different. The course can play very differently across days when the wind is out of the south or north.

TF puts SMU in the upper echelon in the top program golf facilities in the country. Add in the Altus golf performance academy at TF and there few that can compete with this overall package that SMU has to offer. Now it comes down to recruiting and Coaching to make a serious run a national championship. No reason the SMU Men's team shouldn't make a deep run at the NCAA Finals each year.
Good luck to the guys at Regionals and heopefully they can play well and make it to the NCAA finals this year.

The SMU men's golf team was selected as the No. 10 seed in the NCAA Regional in Athens, Ga.

https://smumustangs.com/news/2019/5/1/mens-golf-mustangs-are-headed-to-athens-for-ncaa-regional.aspx?path=mgolf

The magic number to advance to Regional was #60 and SMU was ranked #60 in Golfstat. The team (Kansas State) ranked #61 missed it by 4 tenths of a percent on the computer ranking.

If you are not aware of the huge drop in ranking, it is a pretty interesting story (see below). Prior to the DQ, SMU had lost to just 9 teams all year.

SMU self-corrected a scorecard mistake that probably would never have been known to anyone.

Thanks for the article on the drop in the rankings from the Goodwin. Glad they were able to get in regionals and hopefully are healthy and ready to go.

Speaking of Regionals, when is the last time the women's team has qualified for Regionals? Saw where Bridgette qualified as an individual so congrats to her and good luck. Cant recall how long its been since they have qualified as a team, 10+ years or more?
