LA Galaxy Selects Emil Cuello In First Round Of MLS SuperDraft
CHICAGO – Emil Cuello was selected 19th overall in the first round of the MLS SuperDraft by the LA Galaxy at Chicago's McCormick Place on Friday, Jan. 11.
Prior to the draft, Cuello participated in the 2019 Adidas MLS Player Combine in Orlando. During the combine, he played scrimmages for scouts, underwent physical tests and had the opportunity to speak to interested teams.
Cuello started all 18 games for the Mustangs during the 2018 season (10-5-3), winning both the American Athletic Conference regular-season and tournament championships. The midfielder led the team in points (17), scoring five goals, including two game-winners, and assisting on seven. In his four-year career as a Mustang, he scored 11 goals and played in 73 games and was a part a the senior class that won five AAC trophies and made three NCAA Tournament appearances.
The senior earned multiple accolades from the American Athletic Conference. He was named First-Team All-Conference, Conference Tournament Offensive MVP for the second year in a row and All-Region by the United Soccer Coaches.
He now joins other Mustangs in the pros, including Michael Nelson and Mauro Cichero who were selected in the first two rounds of the 2018 MLS Draft. Cuello is the tenth first round pick selected from SMU soccer, and third in the last two years.
