Trahan, Podmanikova to compete at NCAA Championships

From SMUMustangs.com:

Mustangs Erin Trahan and Andrea Podmanikova are set to compete at the NCAA Division I Swimming and Diving Championships March 20-23 at the Lee & Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center in Austin, Texas.

Preliminary action begins at 9 a.m. CT each day (Thursday-Saturday), with finals starting at 5 p.m.

Trahan, a junior from Crowley, Louisiana, will compete at her first NCAA Championships after earning an invite in the 100-yard butterfly. She posted a career-best time of 51.92 to win the event at the American Athletic Conference Championships and moved to 18th in the NCAA rankings.

Trahan also dropped time in the 50-yard freestyle and 200-yard butterfly at the Championships, and has added those races to her schedule as well.

With individual championships in each race, Trahan was selected the Most Outstanding Swimmer at the conference meet. Her times also place her in the top three of SMU's all-time top performer lists in the 100 and 200 fly, and in the top 10 of the 50 free.

Podmanikova returns to the Championships after placing 27th in the 100-yard breaststroke and 35th in the 200-yard breaststroke as a freshman in 2018. She received invites for both events again this season, and has the option of swimming the 200-yard individual medley.

The Topolcany, Slovakia, native set the SMU program and AAC Championships record with a 2:08.66 in the 200-yard breaststroke, while also winning the 100 distance at the conference meet. Podmanikova is listed third on SMU's all-time list in the 100 breast and fourth in the 200 IM.

The duo helped SMU to a third place finish at The American Championships earlier this month, earning a combined five individual championships and helping the Mustangs to three runner-up relay finishes.

SMU is the only team from The American to qualify multiple student-athletes for the NCAA Championships, and has sent swimmers or divers to the event each year under Head Coach Steve Collins since the 1986-87 season. Overall, SMU has scored at 33 of 35 appearances at the Championships, dating back to the first NCAA meet in 1983, and last scored in 2016 when they registered six points, good to tie for 40th place.

Best wishes to Erin and Andrea at the NCAA Championship. I fully expect both to exceed expectations and will be watching for their results in Preliminaries and beyond.
