Four Mustangs Named To NFF Hampshire Honor Society

IRVING, Texas (NFF/SMU) – Mustangs Garrett Stotts, J.R. Griffin, Larry Hughes and Cole Sterns have been selected as members of the 2019 National Football Foundation (NFF) Hampshire Honor Society, the organization announced Wednesday.

This is the first time in the award's 13-year history the Mustangs have seen four student-athletes honored, and SMU is one of only 29 institutions to be represented all 13 seasons.

"SMU is proud to be one of the few schools to have had a member of the Hampshire Honor Society every year since its inception," said SMU Athletics Director Rick Hart. "It is a tremendous honor for all the young men who have been selected and rightfully brings attention to their hard work in the classroom. It would be our goal that SMU continue to be represented on this prestigious list."

In order to be nominated, student-athletes must be in their final year of playing eligibility, achieved a 3.2 grade-point-average, meet all NCAA-mandated progress toward degree requirements and must have been a starter or significant contributor throughout the 2018 season.

Stotts is no stranger to recognition from the NFF, as he was one of eight collegiate athletes to be named a 2019 NFF Gridiron Club of Dallas Scholar-Athlete. A four-year letterwinner for the Mustangs, Stotts played in all 49 games during his time at SMU and was a semifinalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy, which annually recognizes an individual as the absolute best football scholar-athlete in the nation. He was also a nominee for the Burlsworth Trophy, which is given to the most outstanding football player who began his career as a Walk-On and has shown outstanding performance on the field. He is working toward a degree in sport management with a sports performance leadership minor.

Griffin spent two seasons with the Mustangs after transferring to the Hilltop in 2016. He played in all 12 games in 2018, mostly on special teams. Griffin totaled five carries for 17 years, and scored his first-career touchdown against HBU. He also earned recognition from the College Sports Information Directors of America as a Google Cloud Academic All-District selection. He is set to graduate with a degree in sport management.

Hughes, a graduate transfer from Kansas, started all 12 games for the Mustangs in 2018 splitting time at right guard and right tackle. He is working toward his master's degree in management.

Sterns was also an addition to the Mustang roster in 2018, coming to the Hilltop from Northern Arizona. He played in 10 games for SMU, making two starts, and registered 24 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss and a pass breakup. He is set to graduate with a master's in liberal studies.
