Revisit this piece by Joe Drape, who is also an SMU alum.

Coach Who Revived S.M.U. Looks Back With Pride
By JOE DRAPE
JULY 31, 2012

Forrest Gregg has a tremor in his hand, his once granite shoulders are stooped and his booming baritone is now a halting whisper. His memory comes and goes, but the N.F.L. Hall of Famer doesn’t blame it on the Parkinson’s disease he is battling and expects is the product of too many concussions.

“I’m old,” Gregg, 78, said with a chuckle.

Vince Lombardi wrote that Gregg “was the finest player I ever coached.” Gregg was reminded of that the other day on a phone call after the N.C.A.A. levied a stiff penalty on Penn State’s football program in the wake of the Jerry Sandusky sexual abuse scandal.

Gregg was eager to speak about the finest bunch of players he said he had ever been around. He could tick off most their names, but no one outside the most die-hard Southern Methodist University football fans would ever recognize them.

They were small and not all that talented and most of them did not have scholarships or really any business playing major college football on autumn Saturdays.

The entire SMU family should take a moment to remember and acknowledge this Mustang great. At one of our darkest hours, he stepped up and always took pride in SMU and its football tradition.

+1. I was fortunate enough to have met Coach Gregg while at SMU going to school with his son and daughter. Terrifically humble and kind man. A true great in every sense.

RIP

Makes sense, since Lombardi called Gregg the greatest player he ever coached.

Way back when, when Forrest was athletic director and the athletic offices were at Moody, I was at the ticket office for something. Forrest happened to be in the concourse and made a point to come over and approach me with a warm welcome and friendly conversation.

Could you imagine Hart ever doing something like that? Another time I was in town I tried to make an appointment with Hart to share some ideas I had to increase football attendance. He refused to see me and sent out some staff member who went through the motions of blowing me off.

Love me some Forrest Gregg...peace be with you!!

Praying for the Gregg family this evening...he chose to come to the aid of a school he loved at its darkest hour.
We won't see the likes of him pass this way again.

Soli Deo Gloria.
