SMU Wins By Open Water Against Alabama In Varsity 8 And 4

DALLAS (SMU) – The SMU rowing team defeated Alabama at White Rock Lake in Dallas Friday night, winning the 1st Varsity 8+ and the 1st Varsity 4+ by open water. The Mustangs, celebrating Senior Night, earned the victory after SMU's 1V8+ defeated previously ranked and receiving votes Alabama in the final head-to-head race of the regatta.

Led by seniors Emily Fogg in the coxswain seat and Brittany Rigg in the stroke seat, the Mustangs finished the 2,000-meter sprint in 6:55.73, more than six seconds before Alabama crossed the finish line.

The SMU 1V8+ also posted a faster time than Alabama at the Sunshine State Invite, winning its heat race with the fastest time of the event. The Crimson Tide won the Grand Final after winning their heat, and SMU finished nine seconds behind Alabama after suffering a breakage, coming to a full stop and raising a hand in protest.

The Mustangs defeated Alabama by open water in the 1V4+ on SMU's home lake, posting a 7:57.69 in front of Alabama's 8:06.54. Emily MacAdam was in the bow seat for her final race at home. In the 2V8+ race, SMU finished just over two seconds behind the Crimson Tide, posting a 7:09.50.

SMU also had strong races in the 2V4+, racing two boats against Alabama. The Mustangs closed the margin from Sarasota, but it was the Crimson Tide crossing the line first with a time of 8:08.19.

The Mustangs will compete in the American Athletic Conference Championships May 19 in Oklahoma City.
