Mustang Finish In Third At American Athletic Conference Outdoors After Eight-Medal Sunday

Wichita, Kan. (SMU) - SMU track & field vaulted up the leaderboard on the final day to finish in the third after an incredible Sunday at the American Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships from Wichita State's Cessna Stadium. Junior Chelsea Francis won gold in both the 100 meters and 200 meters while Hannah Miller took gold in the 5000 meters as the Mustangs totaled eight medals on Sunday!

As a team, the Mustangs jumped seven spots on Sunday scoring 80 points, 20 points more than the next best team. The third-place finish was the Mustangs best in the last four seasons. In the day's final event, the Mustangs 4x400 team of Francis, Ashton Woods, Chika Iwuamadi and Madison Pyle jumped past Memphis in the standings with a third-place finish in the event. In the process, the squad set the SMU program record with a time of 3:39.99.

Francis came in with the conference's fastest times in both the 100 and 200 and did not disappoint. After racing in the 4x100 just before, the junior tied the AAC record with an 11.20 in the 100 meter. Later on, the Carrollton, Texas native earned her second gold with a 23.06 in the 200, winning by a margin of 0.39 seconds.

Miller won her sixth career outdoor medal and her first gold with her win in the 5000 meter in a time of 16:30.38 besting frequent competitor Winnie Koskei of Wichita State. Miller won a silver on Friday's 10,000 meter as well. Svenja Ojstersek added to the Mustang medal total with a bronze performance in the 5K. Anneke Grogran finished in 11th with a 17:25.79 time while fellow senior Robin Montemayor clocked an 18:34.01.

Senior Madison Pyle broke her own SMU program record with her silver-medal winning performance in the 400 hurdles. It was the first sub-minute time for a Mustang, clocking in at 59.73! Woods finished not far behind, picking up four points with a fifth-place finish and personal best 1:00.35.

The freshman Iwuamadi took home silver in the 400 meter, also setting an SMU record with a time of 52.70 besting Amber Evans top time of 52.87 (2007).

In her first year on the Hilltop, Nicole Iloanya won a bronze in the triple jump. In her final of six jumps, Iloanya tied her personal best with a distance of 12.96m. Atipa Mabonga scored as well with a 12.60 jump that put her in seventh.

Cassie Ackemann added to Mustang point total with a fourth-place high jump performance, clearing 1.68m. Sophia Weldon set a personal record in the event clearing 1.64 and finishing in 11th.

The Mustang 4x100 team of Francis, Iwuamadi, Alexis Center and Iloanya recorded a time of 45.91 and earned five points with a fourth-place finish.

Next on the slate is the NCAA West Championships. The top-48 marks in each event will earn bids to the meet which begins May 23 in Sacramento, California.
