Maybe for us but certainly not for the NCAA in general - at least not for big time programs (which we are becoming!!!)

Sounds like players want to play for Sonny!

If any of these guys turns out to be a real player, that's a major accomplishment for the coaches. Finding guys who can pay tuition and can play is no easy task. It's hard enough to find players who can do one or the other, let alone those who can do both.

Very true, but not everyone gets it. Some don't need it, but for those whose families are in a grey area, walking on at an expensive school can be a tough sell.

Maybe they are getting large students loans and counting on the government to forgive them.

the difference is that in prior years only preferred walkons were listed preseason as there was a roster limitation until the first day of school. Then the other walkons were added later after school started. I guess that rule has been changed

I take it that one of them had reason to hope for a chance at West Point. But anyone know how many real offers as opposed to interest was shown to any member of the group?

The Meaning of a Preferred Walk-on

"Football is different from most other sports in that it has a roster size limit during part of the year. FBS football teams are limited to 105 participants between the start of fall camp and the first game or start of school (whichever comes first). These walk-ons have to come to campus early and the institution will be footing the bill for their housing and food during preseason practice, so it is important to distinguish who should come in early August and who should wait until school starts."

It's also possible SMU has decided to start mingling in the gray areas of NCAA rules.
