Fogg, Gray, Schenke Named AAC Scholar-Athletes Of The Year

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (The American/SMU) – Emily Fogg, Nora Gray and Lucas Schenke were each selected by American Athletic Conference Faculty Athletic Representatives as Scholar-Athletes of the Year for their respective sports on Tuesday.

To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must maintain both excellent academic credentials and outstanding athletic performance, must have competed in an American Athletic Conference sponsored sport (or non-sponsored for at-large selections) and attained a minimum of senior standing. Each recipient receives a $2,000 post-graduate financial scholarship and a trophy.

Both Fogg (rowing) and Schenke (men's swimming and diving) were selected in AAC-sponsored sports, while Gray (equestrian) was the league's at-large selection.

Fogg guided the SMU 1st Varsity Eight to the program's first conference championship in the sport's premier event. She was named to the All-AAC team for the second straight season, and earned a degree in law and legal reasoning. The senior coxswain also led SMU to wins against Alabama, who was receiving votes at the time, and Creighton in head-to-head regattas. The Mustangs also received votes in the top-20 poll for the first time in program history.

Schenke captained the Mustangs during the 2018-19 season and earned a degree in accounting in May. He earned all-conference honors in three relays in 2019, bringing his career total to 10 relay honors. A two-time conference relay champion, Schenke posted four NCAA B qualifying standards during his time on the Hilltop. He earned CSCAA Scholar All-America Honorable Mention honors in 2016, and is a three-time member of the conference All-Academic Team.

Gray was named Co-NCEA Rider of the Year over fences, after compiling a near perfect 15-2 mark. She earned another eight wins on the flat, going 4-0 in the UEC Championship and NCEA Championship over fences. The first-team Ariat All-American also tallied four MOPs, All-UEC honors and UEC Rider of the Year (over fences). She also eclipsed the program's all-time wins record, stringing together 85 wins for the Mustangs. In May, she graduated with a business degree.

The conference will continue to announce awards throughout the week, including the Commissioner's Postgraduate Leadership Award, Community Impact Award, All-Academic Team and Team Academic Excellence Awards.
