UCONN Will Pay 17 million to leave the AAC early. Looks like they will pay 5 million more than the
12 million to required leave with 27 months notice. Lots of luck with trying to be an independent in
the Football Bowl Subdivision.

Re: UCONN Will Pay 17 millionSeems like a good outcome for the AAC. Predict UConn will drop football eventually despite all the money they've invested. No one in the ACC will play them after their lawsuit, and there aren't near enough other schools (1) anywhere near them and (2) with flexible-enough schedules once conference games begin. Army is one, I suppose; that's about it.

Your first point is less relevant as they just need to get games. Traveling fans isn’t the key and it’s not like anyone other than Temple was traveling there for football in the AAC. Between FCS teams, Army, BYU, UMass, and NMSU they can make an ugly schedule work. Hopefully the AAC can make good moves in response. They really didn’t lose much other than easy scheduling formats in football with UConn leaving. All the value lost was hoops which thankfully isn’t hurting school payouts. Possibly adding VCU or St Louis could replace some of that hoops value.
Re: UCONN Will Pay 17 million
Oh I wasn't talking about getting fans to their stadium. They have zero leverage, especially for near-term schedules, and will be on the road most of the time. I was talking about them being able to get games on the schedule at all, and especially ones where they don't have to fly all over the country just to string a full schedule together.
Re: UCONN Will Pay 17 millionCinci writer believes that the AAC let them off easy. AAC should have dragged it out to the point where they would have paid more or else not have time to make any schedule for football.
Re: UCONN Will Pay 17 million
Except that every single AD and President in the conference have to at least think, when something like this happens, that it could be them one day asking to be let off easily enough if a P5 dream comes true.
Re: UCONN Will Pay 17 millionwe have a whole conference of teams who need time to adjust OUR schedules. take their money and tell em get lost. who do we want to replace them? with memphis uh and wsu passing them and everybody coming along, we will be all right as bball conference. we could end up with a better football member. moving on.
does anybody have overall budget numbers for smu/aac annual basketball/football programs? is a million or so per school gonna make any real difference? do we get to collect an entry fee from the replacement? would like to see others take on the disruption factor.
Re: UCONN Will Pay 17 million
I think flying everywhere is a given in their situation right now. Their best bets are to try and get other independents like Liberty, Army, BYU, UMass, and NMSU to rearrange some dates. Between that, a couple fcs teams, and whatever September games they have it’s at least a start before they simply take frequent 1 for 2’s or a paycheck road only matchups. It’s a bad setup for their football but their hoops got what they wanted.
Re: UCONN Will Pay 17 millionGoing Indy in FBS is a tough road as far as scheduling once conference schedules heat up. SEC schools like cupcake games late in their schedules and UConn would fit that bill (vs FCS schools typically willing to take those paycheck games), but UConn might also opt to drop down to FCS level and see if they could get in with Villanova, a school that has had football success at the FCS level.
