Munjoma scores in OT, No. 8 men's soccer stays perfect

From SMUMustangs.com:

DENVER (SMU) -- With their backs against the wall on the road, Eddie Munjoma found open grass and made the Denver Pioneers pay, as the senior's golden goal gave the Mustangs their seventh straight win in overtime, beating Denver 2-1.

The No. 8 Mustangs (7-0-0) were all even at 0-0 with Denver through 83 minutes on Saturday night, before Denver's Josh Drack scored on the Mustangs in the 84th minute to put the Pioneers (1-5-1) up 1-0. It was the first goal allowed this season for last week's National Player of the Week, Shane Lanson. As the next six minutes ticked away, it appeared that the Mustangs impressive six-game winning streak to start the season would come to close.

But in the 88th minute, Garrett McLaughlin won a deflected ball and biked the ball over the goalkeeper to find an equalizer. It was McLaughlin's sixth goal of the season as the senior from Oklahoma City now ranks third in the AAC in goals scored. After McLaughlin's goal, the Mustangs would head to overtime for the first time this season.

"We were poor in the first half. It was probably the worse we played this year but the guys regrouped at halftime," head coach Kevin Hudson said. "They were excellent in the second half and created a lot of chances."

As overtime started, the Pioneers took the first shot but narrowly missed the net, allowing the Mustangs to get their chance.

In the 94th minute, SMU pushed the ball down the field as Gabriel Costa had the ball on a string, dribbling in between Pioneer defenders before having the ball poked out from under him. But the poked ball rolled right into the foot of Eddie Munjoma who split two defenders and fired a shot past the Pioneer GK to secure a 2-1 SMU win.

"It was great to see the character of the group to fight back for the late equalizer and eventually find a winner in overtime." said Hudson. "We're looking forward to starting conference play next week."

Conference play opens on Saturday night when the Mustangs travel to Tulsa and are back in action at 7 p.m.

Notables...
• Munjoma now leads the team with 14 points, a top-10 mark nationally. His five goals and four assists are both second-most on the team.
• McLaughlin has six goals this season. During his All-American season, McLaughlin had five goals through seven games, one less than he has this season in the same time.
• Shane Lanson allowed his first goal of the season in the victory. His GAA of .200 is the best in the AAC.
