SMU getting talked about on Omaha sports radio

Postby huskerpony » Tue Oct 08, 2019 5:00 pm

Haven't been on the board in a long time! Just heard the local sports radio guys in Omaha talking about the game. Mentioned the 6-0 start, talked about the kickoff of course, and said that before Sat all-time when facing a 21 pt deficit, we were 2-102! So now 3-102... Great comeback!

So we have 3 of the 9 21-point comebacks?

The 9-3000 stat is teams going into the 4th quarter. SMU has only come back 3 times down 21 at any point in the game.

3-102, coming back from a 21 point deficit. I've seen two of them.

@ Baylor in 1978, down 21-0 going in to the 4th quarter. 4 TD passes from Ford to Tolbert in the 4th. SMU wins 28-21. Mustang Mania was alive and well that day.

And now last Saturday.

Anyone know when the 3rd comeback was? How far behind were we against UConn in the Miracle on Mockingbird?

I want to say the third one was also against Baylor, happening sometime around '75 or so - I think I read that somewhere.

Down 28-7 (late 2nd quarter) versus Temple at Ford in 2013. Won 59-49, Garrett Gilbert set the SMU single game passing yards record (538).

Down 30-14 (mid 4th quarter) versus UConn in 1989, won 31-30.

I watched Chuck Hixson bring us from 35-0 to 35-29 against Arkansas in 1968 or 69. If we could have held them one last time in the fourth quarter there is no doubt in my mind Chuck would have completed the comeback.

Mike Ford is a really good guy but I remember seeing him out on Greenville Avenue the night before some of the games. I hated to see his demise as a starter. He had quite an arm.
