Maybe the Moody Foundation is going to match SMU with their $130 MM gift to UT.

Thank you; here is the article for those not able to access it.

Southern Methodist University has received a $100 million gift from the Galveston-based Moody Foundation to fund its eighth degree-granting school — the Moody School of Graduate and Advanced Studies.
SMU president R. Gerald Turner called the donation — the largest of any kind in its 104-year history — “a big bang moment” for the university’s graduate programs and research efforts.

“There are very few things that are transformational,” Turner said in an interview. “This gift truly is.”

The Moody graduate school will house all post-graduate degree programs of the Dedman College of Sciences and Humanities, the Simmons School of Education and Human Development, the Lyle School of Engineering and Meadows School of the Arts.

Cox School of Business, Dedman College of Law and Perkins School of Theology will not come under the purview of the new graduate school, but Moody School will coordinate cross-disciplinary research and professional development across all SMU schools.

“We’ve created outstanding graduate programs, but we haven’t been able to coordinate and boost them for interdisciplinary research in areas that are new and emerging,” Turner said.
The gift will enable SMU to construct a new building, Moody Hall, directly across from the Simmons quadrangle on Airline Road.

The donation will also fund a deanship, pay for additional SMU and visiting faculty, offer financial support for graduate students and create a research innovation incubator for technology-related graduate programs.

“This is the next big move in the development of the university’s national competitiveness,” Turner said. “Graduate education and research that’s technology-based is just our next step, but it’s a big step.
“You can either peck away at it, or you can get somebody like the Moody Foundation to significantly jump-start it. But there aren’t too many Moodys out there.”

The foundation is headquartered in Galveston and operates a field office in Dallas. Francie Moody-Dahlberg, 50, the foundation’s executive director and chairman, lives here. The great-granddaughter of the late financial mogul and foundation’s founder, William Lewis Moody Jr., received her bachelor of arts degree with a psychology major at SMU in 1992 and is a member of the university’s board of trustees.

“We all know that transformative discoveries come when people from different disciplines and broad perspectives are free to collaborate in unique ways,” Moody-Dahlberg said in a statement. “I am eager to see what the combination of world-changing students and faculty coupled with exceptional resources will produce on this campus, in the region and across Texas.”

Her family’s foundation, which is entirely Texas-centric, derives most of its revenue from dividends from stock held in American National Insurance Co., which was founded by her great-grandfather.
SMU is following a model created by other private universities such as Notre Dame, Vanderbuilt and Dartmouth that historically focused on undergraduate education but have expanded graduate programs of late.

The school intends to be “a full partner in commercial and global problem-solving, and a pipeline for the leaders to lead those challenges,” Turner said. “As the Texas economy booms, companies and institutions look to universities like SMU for innovative ideas, data-driven research and technology that can create opportunity.”

Moody School will begin operations next fall, focused primarily on the doctoral and Ph.D. programs of Dedman, Simmons, Lyle and Meadows. All post-graduate degree programs of those schools will be phased into the graduate school within the next three years.

Of SMU’s 12,000 students, about 45% are pursuing postgraduate degrees.

Big data buy-in

The idea of a graduate school at SMU goes back more than two decades but began to coalesce two years ago when the university formed a task force to study how other universities are managing graduate degrees.

That’s when Brad Cheves, vice president for development and external affairs, began SMU’s courtship of the Moody Foundation.

“The opportunity that the task force saw was the big data capacity that we have spent millions to build in the last few years, as well as the growing reputation of our top-ranked digital game development graduate program, Guildhall,” Cheves said. “Being able to broaden that competency across interdisciplinary lines is what this is all about.”

For example, Guildhall, Simmons and UT Southwestern Medical Center are developing a virtual reality program to train doctors and nurse midwives to surgically treat women who hemorrhage after giving birth. The program will be tested in Zambia.

Under the new structure, this collaboration will be coordinated by the Moody School.

The announcement of the Moody gift, to be made on campus Tuesday afternoon, comes less than a month after private equity executive David B. Miller and his wife, Carolyn, gave $50 million to SMU’s Edwin L. Cox School of Business.

The Miller gift is the largest single donation to SMU from an individual donor.

The previous largest single donation to SMU from a foundation was $45 million given by the Meadows Foundation in 2006 for the arts school and Meadows Museum.
Moody’s latest commitment is five times bigger than its last large gift to SMU, which was $20 million to renovate Moody Coliseum in 2011.
$2 billion endowment

In the last 75 years, the Moody Foundation has given more than $1.5 billion to support universities, libraries, museums and hospitals across Texas. With an estimated endowment of nearly $2 billion, it is one of the 100 largest foundations in the country.

Over the weekend, the University of Texas at Austin announced that it has received $130 million from Moody for a new basketball arena and events center — the largest single gift from a foundation in UT history.

Ross Moody, one of three foundation trustees and chairman and CEO of National Western Life Group, is a UT alum who lives in Austin.
SMU’s first Moody School building will be built on a surface parking lot across from the Simmons complex. The building will also house facilities supporting research. Plans include a three-building quadrangle like the one for Simmons.

SMU currently has about 500 Ph.D. students, said James Quick, dean of graduate studies. “Doubling that number is ultimately a good target. We shouldn’t strive for that right away, because part of this is bringing in better and better students.

“Another big driver is to increase the quality and recognition of our Ph.D. programs to enhance the stature of SMU.”

Really exciting move for the university at large. Wish it didn't need a building and could just be for academic support (scholarships and professors) - but it is a pretty big deal to double the number of PHD's - this will get us on the national research map which is important for long term viability. Lberal arts isn't going to cut it any more.

It seems similar to Emory's Laney School.

There are probably other urban research university models. A key is quality of students and faculty and program renown. There may be many opportunities for people to spend their $ doing DLA type enrichment study as well.
