Three Mustangs Named Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Semifinalists

TYLER, Texas (SMU) – Shane Buechele, James Proche and Xavier Jones were all named semifinalists for the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award, which honors the top Division I offensive player with ties to the state of Texas. The three Mustangs make up 11 total honorees.

Maxwell and Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award semifinalist Buechele leads the conference and ranks in the top-10 nationally in passing yards (3,195) and touchdowns (28), and has thrown multiple touchdowns in an SMU-record tying nine straight games.

Among active FBS leaders, he is seventh in completions per game (19.76), eighth in passing yards per game (237.3), 12th in passing yards (7,831), 13th in touchdown passes (58) and 15th in completion percentage (.629) and total offense (8,152).

Biletnikoff Award semifinalist Proche leads the nation with 8.8 receptions per game and is fifth with 12 touchdowns and 10th with 1,008 receiving yards.

He set the SMU career receiving touchdowns record at 36, surpassing Emmanuel Sanders, and is second all-time at SMU in receiving yards with 3,732. In the win over ECU, he posted his ninth straight game with a receiving touchdown, setting an SMU record, and has posted four 100-yard games and four games with 10+ receptions this season.

Among active FBS receivers, Proche is first in receptions, receiving yards and receiving touchdowns, while ranking third in receptions per game (5.91) and fourth in receiving yards per game (79.4).

Jones leads Mustang running backs with 1,063 yards and 18 rushing touchdowns off 196 carries in 2019. The senior has at least one touchdown in each game this season and seven 100-yard rushing performances.

After posting three touchdowns against ECU, Jones set the SMU record for total season touchdowns with 20 (18 rushing, 2 receiving) and total points in a season (120). He also became the sixth Mustang to post multiple 1,000-yard rushing seasons (2017).

Jones has 40 career-rushing touchdowns (4th SMU) and 43 total career touchdowns (T-3rd SMU). Both numbers rank fifth among NCAA active FBS leaders. His 3,223 career-rushing yards and 258 career points rank sixth for a Mustang.

No. 21 SMU plays at Navy Saturday at 2:30 p.m. CT on CBS Sports Network.
