Texas Bowl: SMU vs. Kansas State
...With the SEC likely unable to fill its spot in the Texas Bowl, expect organizers to make a run at SMU (9-2) to get the Mustangs in that matchup with a Big 12 opponent. It would be well-attended locally and a win-win for everyone involved.

Love sonny and this team but I’m not spending time and money going to frisco for a “bowl”.

Anywhere else I’m there.

Texas Bowl would be amazing. Frisco Bowl, Gasparilla Bowl, etc would be sorely disappointing. I would be happy with Liberty Bowl, BBVA Bowl, Las Vegas Bowl or something comparable. Beat Tulane!

Las Vegas isn't an option as the MW and Pac-12 have enough bowl eligible teams.

The problem is that SMU is currently #4 in the AAC overall standings. Unless Navy losses to UH Saturday and/or Memphis beats Cincinnati twice, it will be tough to move up in the pecking order.

That being said, beating Tulane is the first step to a better bowl.

Getting a better bowl slot will require maneuvering/negotiating. Fourth place in the conference is not as relevant as our record (we need to get to 10-2) and our location and storyline. We should be able to play in the Texas Bowl if we beat Tulane. Memphis needs to take care of Cincinnati twice to land in the Cotton Bowl. Then Cincinnati lands in the BBVA bowl, Navy in the Military Bowl, and we'd be able to fill in for the SEC in the Texas Bowl. UCF and Temple likely would get the Hawaii/Gasparillia/Boca Raton/Cure Bowl, and Tulane lands the Frisco or Hawaii Bowl. I hat to say it but unless we get upgraded to the Texas Bowl or something comparable I think our best bet would be another trip to Hawaii.

Can anyone shed some light on how these selections actually happen? Say 247Sports is on to something and the Texas Bowl folks want SMU to play. Do they just get to pick whoever they want?

What if one of the other bowls that already has an agreement with the American wants us instead? Do they get right of first refusal? What would make one of those other bowls not want us, but the Texas Bowl do want us?

Also, how much say does SMU and/or the conference have in the final decisions?

I would assume the AAC commissioner and Rick Hart need to to be burning up the phone lines talking to the Texas Bowl.

Here's some really important numbers

Bowl Payout

Frisco = 750K
Gasparilla = 1.1 million
Texas Bowl = 6.3 million

Exactly. I presume Aresco and Hart have been talking with the bowl reps the past few weeks building the case for SMU.

That sounds like the best case scenario for SMU.

Bowls start with the conferences they have contractual tie-ins. But if a conference can't produce a team (like the SEC), then it comes down to negotiations. Usual questions in the decision - Which schools are attractive to the bowl? What schools want to play? Who will make a good match-up for TV (ESPN)? Who promises to buy more tickets? No insult intended, but I can't see any bowl tied to the AAC demanding SMU (or any other specific AAC team). If he's doing his job, Aresco will work to make sure teams get to go to the bowl they desire while at the same time keeping the bowls tied to the AAC happy. Lots of negotiations and horse trading will take place over the next two weeks.

I wouldn't trust anything from watch stadium. My goodness that one announcer during SMU vs UNLV, if anyone caught it, said SMU had a great MRS degree there....
