Soccer transfers

Postby Terry Webster » Fri Jan 24, 2020 8:34 pm

I saw that we picked up a couple of transfers for the mens team. Can someone explain how transfers work for soccer? Obviously it is a lot looser than football or basketball.

You only have to sit out a year for baseball, men's & women's basketball, football (FBS), and men's ice hockey.

From SMUMustangs.com:

DALLAS (SMU) - The 20-time conference champion SMU men's soccer program announced the addition of a pair of transfers in anticipation of the 2020 season, it was announced by head coach Kevin Hudson on Friday.

The pair joins the Mustangs after a 2019 campaign that saw the team go 18-2-1, finishing No. 7 in the final coaches poll. The team won its third straight AAC postseason championship and advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight for the first time since 2010. The Mustangs return a bulk of their starting lineup after losing three starters, who all signed professional contracts.

Skage Simonsen - So. - Bergen, Norway - MF

Simonsen comes to the Hilltop by way of New York City, as the Bergen, Norway, native spent his sophomore season playing midfield for the St. John's Red Storm. As a sophomore, he played in 20 games, including starts in the final 14 games of the season. As a freshman at SJU, he played in 18 games, starting 17. He scored a combined 9 goals and dished out 10 assists for the Red Storm, and netted a pair of game-winning goals each season. His 36th minute goal proved to be the game-winner vs. Syracuse in the opening round of the 2019 NCAA Tournament.

As a freshman he was honored as the Big East Freshman of the Year and an All-Big East Second Team selection, adding a unanimous selection to the Big East All-Freshman Team. As a sophomore he earned All-Big East Second Team honors once again.

"Skage is a gifted midfielder with the versatility to play numerous positions. He has excellent technical ability and is very comfortable on the ball." Hudson said. "He led St. John's to the 3rd round of the NCAA tournament, so we know he has experience in big games. We believe he has the ability to create and score goals here at SMU and are excited to assist in his development and welcome him to the Hilltop."

Timo Hummrich - So. - Berlin, Germany - DEF

Hummrich joins the men's soccer program after two successful years at Delware where he started 30 games over two seasons for the Blue Hens. As a freshman, he started 16 games at UD, scoring 4 goals as a centerback, including three game-winners. He was named the UD Alumni Association Team MVP and CAA Rookie of the Year, in addition to a First Team All-CAA honoree. He followed a strong 2018 with an even better season in 2019, leading the team with 14 starts and scoring 6 goals for the Blue Hens. As a sophomore he was the lone member of the Delaware team to earn a spot on an All-Conference team, as he was named to the All-CAA second team.

As a youth in Germany, Hummrich starred in the academy of Hertha BSC of the Bundesliga, culminating in a German Youth Championship in 2018. He plans on majoring in management at SMU.

"Timo is an experienced central defender with excellent leadership qualities." Hudson said. "He was the CAA Rookie of the Year and First Team All-CAA, so he's proven his ability to impact the college game. He is an excellent defender but also has the ability to build the game from the back. He's possesses a great combination of academic drive, ability on the field and a competitive mentality. We are thrilled to welcome Timo to the Hilltop!"

Hudson and the soccer program will announce the fall class at a later date.
