No. 13 SMU’s Goodwin Second After First Round At The Prestige

LA QUINTA, California – SMU’s Noah Goodwin shot a 4-under 67 and is one stroke off the lead after the first of three rounds at The Prestige presented by Charles Schwab. The No. 13 men’s golf team posted a 286 in the first round, and is tied for sixth in a field that includes six top-25 teams.

Goodwin, who is the fourth-ranked golfer in the country, had six birdies on the par 71 / 7,100-yard Greg Norman Course at PGA West, including a run of three straight to start the back nine. Chasing his second individual tournament win of the season, Goodwin is tied for second, one stroke behind Pepperdine’s Joey Vrizch,

The Mustangs were 2-over in the event’s opening round, but played the back-nine of the Norman Course at 4-under, making 12 of their 16 birdies coming in. SMU is tied for sixth entering the second round of the 54-hole event. No. 1 Pepperdine leads at 9-under par.

“The guys fought hard late,” said Interim Head Coach Chris Parra. “They made several birdies coming in that made dinner taste a little better.”

“We’re still knocking off a little rust, with it being the first event of the spring,” added Parra. “We’re excited for the next two rounds.”

Justin Thompson and Ollie Osborne each signed for a 1-over 72 Monday. Osborne co-led the tournament by playing the four par 3s at 2-under par, while Thompson birdied two of the three par 5s. The pair is tied for 31st entering Tuesday’s second round.

Mac Meissner birdied three consecutive holes on the back-nine to finish with a 4-over 75, and is tied for 54th. Daniel Connolly tied for 70th after a 7-over 78.

In the concurrent Prestige Individual Tournament, hosted at Coral Mountain Golf Club, Jackson Markham recorded a career-best 8-under 64, and leads the 33-player tournament by three strokes. Markham birdied nine holes, finishing a rare round with more birdies than pars (8). Piran Adi used 70 strokes to get around the par 72 / 7,145-yard track, and is tied for fifth.

The Mustangs tee off at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday for the second round of The Prestige. Live scoring is available on Golfstat.com.

Anyone know why Jackson Markham played the individual tournament as opposed to the team event and for those more familiar what is the difference between the two tournaments since they are both called The Prestige?

Interim HC made decision to put another player in team lineup over Jackson. The individual tournament was played on a different golf course. It allowed teams to bring additional players to gain experience. Jackson will be in the team lineup for next tournament in Vegas.

Meanwhile, our guys never could get off that 6th place position but both Osborne and Goodwin finished under par for the 54 hole event and had top 10 finishes
