SMU To Begin Welcoming Student-Athletes Back On June 15

DALLAS (SMU) - SMU student-athletes will begin to return to campus beginning June 15 as part of a phased return plan. The three-phase approach was designed utilizing guidance from local and national health officials and best practices.

Led by Mike Morton, SMU's Associate A.D. of Student Health and Well-Being, and Drs. Matt and Peter Davis, The SMU Athletics Task Force for a Healthy Opening relied heavily on input from doctors and national, state and local health officials in developing this plan. Also serving on the Task Force were Deputy A.D. Kurt Pottkotter, Sr. Associate A.D.s Lauren Adee, Kyle Conder, Kris Harris and Brad Sutton, Assistant A.D. for Human Performance Kaz Kazadi and Men's Soccer Head Coach Kevin Hudson.

All phases include guidelines for social distancing, face coverings, enhanced sanitization, limited groups, modified use of space and other safety measures, and in addition to the standard pre-participation physical exam, all student-athletes will be tested for COVID-19 before the start of any physical activity on campus. They will receive two tests upon the return to campus - an antibody test to determine if they have previously had COVID-19, as well as a diagnostic test to see if they currently have the virus. Student-athletes, coaches and staff will all complete online educational training before returning and everyone will be screened daily with a temperature check and health questionnaire.

After these initial results are back, SMU Athletics will begin Phase I of its plan. During this 14-day period, there will be outdoor activity only for small groups of up to 10 people, with all practicing social distancing at all times. For the first seven days, there will be no sharing of balls or other equipment and each individual will have his/her own water bottle. There will also be no mixing of groups on subsequent work out days and there will be no locker room access. Additionally, face coverings will be worn when not exercising.

After seven days, SMU Athletics will begin to add weight room access for these individuals in groups of 10 or less, while still practicing physical distancing. As part of the plan, all student-athletes must continue to wear personal protective equipment during each appointment other than for lifting sessions. Meanwhile, all weight-room equipment and facilities will be sanitized before each session and then again at the end of each day. SMU's Strength & Conditioning staff will also follow national guidelines for a safer return to training following a period of inactivity.

Following those 14 days, Phase II would begin, allowing groups to grow in size up to 50 at a time, while continuing social distancing, and allowing shared equipment with strict cleaning protocols in place.

After a 14-day Phase II, Phase III would kick off. While careful adherence to infection control will remain in place, during Phase III the handling of common objects such as game balls and other shared equipment can occur and contact activities can begin. Because of the increase in contact among individuals, health monitoring and contact tracing will play an important role. Phase III can only begin after Phases I and II have been successfully implemented, protocols involving personnel, student-athletes and infrastructure continue to be followed and amended as necessary and that federal and/or state criteria were satisfied.

Throughout the summer, student-athletes will return to campus and undergo this process, with those completing international travel self-quarantining for 14 days to start.

The plans are subject to change based on guidance from national, state and local health officials.
