Buechele, Roberson, Jr., Named To Maxwell Award Watch List

PHILADELPHIA (MFC/SMU) – SMU's Shane Buechele and Reggie Roberson, Jr., were named to the Maxwell Award Watch List, which is presented annually to the most outstanding player in college football. Buechele is one of six returning semifinalists for the award from the 2019 season, and SMU is one of 21 schools with multiple candidates.

Buechele also starts 2020 off as a member of the Davey O'Brien and Wuerffel Trophy Watch Lists, while Roberson, Jr., is a member of the Biletnikoff Award Watch List.

Buechele threw for 3,929 yards and 34 touchdowns in 2019, both SMU records. His passing TD total, passing yards per game (302.2) and points responsible for (222) all led the league. Buechele posted three games of 400+ yards and registered 4,034 yards of total offense, which ranks second in a season for a Mustang.

Heading into the season, Buechele ranks in the top 10 on active career FBS lists for completions (2nd, 710), passing yards (2nd, 8,565), total offense (2nd, 8,928), TD passes (3rd, 64), passing yards per game (5th, 237.9), total TDs responsible for (5th, 70) and completions per game (6th, 19.72).

Last season, Buechele was a finalist for the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award, a semifinalist for both the Maxwell and Davey O'Brien Awards and a first-team All-American Athletic Conference selection.

Roberson, Jr., was also named a preseason third-team All-American by Phil Steele's Magazine.

The senior started all eight games played in 2019 before a season ending injury, and finished second on the teams with 43 receptions for 803 yards and added six touchdowns. Roberson, Jr., currently ranks seventh among FBS active career leaders in yards per catch at 16.2.

The pair was named the best quarterback/wide receiver duo in Texas by Dave Campbell's Texas Football, and to the outlet's All-Texas College Team.
