North Texas universities all came in on the back half of U.S. News & World Report’s annual ranking of engineering graduate programs.

University of Texas at Dallas, University of Texas at Arlington, Southern Methodist University and University of North Texas all ranked below the half way mark of the 140 total programs in the 2021 edition of the magazine’s Best Graduate Schools for the schools' engineering programs.

The more than 200 schools that grant doctoral degrees in engineering were surveyed from fall of 2019 through early 2020. The schools that responded were then ranked based on student selectivity, peer and recruiter assessments, faculty resources and research activity.

UTD was the top in North Texas, with nearly four doctoral students per faculty member. Nearly 2 percent of faculty members are a part of the National Academy of Engineering and the school had $53.88 million in average research expenditures in 2018 and 2019. Biomedical, computer, electrical, material and mechanical engineering programs were also recognized in their individual categories.

UTA was given a 2.4 from its peers and a 3.2 from recruiters on a five-point scale, tying it with two other schools for the 80th spot on the list. About 65 percent of students who applied were accepted and the mean quantitative GRE score for masters and PhD students was 157. The aerospace program, along with the biomedical, civil, computer, electrical, industrial, material and mechanical, also ranked among other specialty programs across the nation.

SMU tied with four other universities for the 114th place, with nearly 1,000 total graduate students in the engineering program. The school granted 20 doctorate degrees between 2018 and 2019. The school’s civil, computer, electrical, environmental, industrial and mechanical were included as some of the best in the nation, according to the ranking.

Twelve schools tied for the 140th spot in the rankings, including University of North Texas. The average research expenditure in 2018 and 2019 per faculty member was $142,930 for a total of $9.78 million. Biomedical, computer, electrical, material and mechanical engineering programs at UNT were recognized in the specialty rankings as well.

Grading schools on the number of PHD students in engineering is a joke. It is an unnecessary degree in the business world.
