Men’s Golf Tied For Third Entering Southwestern Invitational Final Round

WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif.- SMU men's golf is tied for third after shooting even par in the second round of the Southwestern Invitational Tuesday. The final round is Wednesday, with live television coverage on Golf Channel starting at 2 p.m. CT.

Two Mustangs are in the top five of the individual standings, Noah Goodwin and Mac Meissner, both shooting 1-under 71s Tuesday. At 5-over, SMU is seven strokes behind tournament leader Arizona State at 2-under. The Mustangs improved by five strokes from Monday to Tuesday, as three players shot par-or-better.

Goodwin is tied for third at 3-under, shooting 3-under on the back nine for the second consecutive day. Goodwin, who had four birdies on the day, is five strokes behind tournament leader David Puig of Arizona State.

"I definitely left a lot out there today on the front nine, but I was able to battle back on the back nine," Goodwin said. "It was definitely scorable today, way more than it was yesterday. We just need to go out there tomorrow in tough conditions and try to hold on and make a few strokes up."

Meissner is 1-under par through 36 holes of the 54-hole tournament, using four birdies Tuesday to get around the par 72 / 6,992-yard course. Meissner has birdied six of the eight par-5s this week, helping the Mustangs to a tournament best 20-under score on par 5s.

Freshman Nathan Petronzio wrote an even-par 72 on his scorecard, notching his first collegiate par-or-better round in just his second try. Petronzio, who had three birdies on the day, is tied for 15th at 2-over.

Sophomore Ollie Osborne had a 2-over 74, finishing his round with 11 straight pars. Osborne is tied for 37th at 8-over. Sophomore Justin Thompson is tied for 40th at 9-over. Thompson finished the second round with a 4-over 76.

The Mustangs tee off at 10:55 a.m. CT Wednesday for the final round, as tee times were moved up to avoid the threat of rain. Television coverage is on Golf Channel, and live scoring is available on Golfstat.

Ended up third. Great to see us stand toe to toe with some of the best teams out there. San Diego State and Arizona State are elite programs.
UNC better keep that Ram away from Peruna
